Chubby potheads with lots of rooms

15.05.2004

By DIANA McCURDY

Scared of walking in the dark, dedicated to smoking pot, poor and fat?

That's the picture of New Zealanders that has emerged from a new Australian book, How Australia Compares, which measures 18 developed democracies against the lucky country.

In a series of league tables, authors Rodney Tiffen and Ross Gittins deal the New Zealand ego a savage blow. Among other things, the book reveals New Zealanders are the most likely to fear burglary and the least likely to feel safe walking in the dark.

But we do have some justification for our anxiety. New Zealand's crime rate is second highest after Sweden (although that could be partly because we are most likely to report crime to the police). We also have the second-highest proportion of our population in prison, after the United States.

New Zealanders can't even take solace in a high standard of living. We fare worse than Australia in almost all economic statistics. When measured by income per capita, New Zealanders' material standard of living is lowest in the developed world.

Our main consolations, it seems, are drugs and food. New Zealand ranks top in the developed world for cannabis use and third for amphetamines. Our consumption of sugar is world-beating and our obesity rate is well above average.

Nevertheless, we remain the world's fourth-hardest workers. Only the Australians, the Americans and Japanese put in more hours.

As for the good news: we might be relatively poor, but we live in big houses. Seventy-four per cent of New Zealand homes have more than five rooms.

New Zealand also has the highest proportion of young people in the developed world, and one of the highest entry rates into university.

We may not be faring too well now, but as the rest of the world ages, there's still potential for improvement. Watch out Australia, there's life in your young cousin yet.

::D: What a laugh and what utter bullshit.

lets pick abit at this info...

Ok the walking at night thing is very true, NZ isnt the sort of place where you can just for for a midnight walk.

Where its different to AU, is in Australia there are no gangs but plenty of clubs. The clubs help keep the gangs from forming.

Now Nz has its fair share of clubs also like Highways 61s, Rebels mc, loners mc, outlaws mc etc.

However Australia Doesnt have half the population IN gangs Like the Mongrel Mob, Black power, White power etc.

The Mongrel Mob and Black power if they joined forces could quite easily take over the Government etc.

New Zealanders can't even take solace in a high standard of living. We fare worse than Australia in almost all economic statistics. When measured by income per capita, New Zealanders' material standard of living is lowest in the developed world.

Based on what? most things are cheaper in NZ these days, compared to Australia. So they dont NEED to earn as much to buy the same things.

New Zealanders also are not greedy and dont need to have a million dolars in assets to be happy.

Our main consolations, it seems, are drugs and food. New Zealand ranks top in the developed world for cannabis use and third for amphetamines. Our consumption of sugar is world-beating and our obesity rate is well above average.

because Marijuana grows like a weed in NZ, its spread throughout the country and it grows wild almost everywhere, Its able to do this because the seedlings are well protected by Gorse bushes so the animals etc dont eat it.

Obesity rate is simply because New Zealands food is far superior to anything in Australia, Look at the meat industry for instance. NZ doesnt have issues with feeding stock, droughts or anything horrible like that.

Its food is far higher quality and once again its food is better AND cheaper.

NZ also is surrounded by sea life and most Kiwis eat alot of seafood like Hapuka, Paua, kina etc.

Most of us kiwis were raised on farm fresh meat and seafood.

Because Kiwis smoke ALOT of weed they also get the munchies and so the sweets sell well.

Nevertheless, we remain the world's fourth-hardest workers. Only the Australians, the Americans and Japanese put in more hours.

True Most kiwis are bloody hard workers, its just built into us. Infact the day I arrived in Au I was full time employed. It seems the Aussies cant get enough of Kiwi workers.

We also have a better knowledge base, for instance in Australia just about every part of the car is fixed by a different trade. be it electricians, a/c specialists, underbody specailist. Where In NZ at least when I done my trade the mechainc done EVERYTHING themselves.

This make the person alot more valued.

As for the good news: we might be relatively poor, but we live in big houses. Seventy-four per cent of New Zealand homes have more than five rooms.

I dont for one believe this, I lived in around 20 Houses in NZ and NEVER had a house with more than 3 bedrooms? but hey it could be true still and would be because Kiwis generally include Pacific Islanders and most of them have uncles and aunties living together as a big family.

most homes in NZ are also made from Wood and alot are highsets (2 story).

basically New zealand has alot going for it, but theres ALOT of rasical bullshit going on, and thats one of the reasons I left.

I wanted better for my kids that I could have given them in NZ.

Theres also alot more jobs here than in NZ.

Sorry to ramble on
