Some advice needed about fans.

Recommended Posts

Build a box for the fan. I made an mdf one just big enough for the fan and stuffed it full of foam and egg cartons. It honestly reduces the noise by 70%

Sweet dude... i was thinking of a box but the egg cartons sound like a cool idea.... I read on my search on the internet that the fans can create static electricity and some foam was a bad idea and has the ability to cause a fire

Im trying to limit my brain fart decisions to a minimum hence the beginner questions

What do you think about teh phresh fan silencers...? I think I will definitely need some form of silencing.. thats why i was looking at a fan with a controller to buy a bigger fan and dial it back hence making it move the same air just working at less velocity.

Thanks for the advice mate

Heya Midge =) , yeah I seen the silencers. They work if placed directly  after the fan. This is where most of the air rush noise is created, the first 3-4 ft after the fan, in the ducting.

Dialling back fans is like taking away ventiltion, for the sake of stealth. Plants care not for stealth, but they do care for proper ventilation.

And advice is freely given man, like to see people get it right and not blow needless money on shit.

Do you reckon they would be worth a go?

My tent would be around 1.2 x 1.2 but havent decided...Thinking of trying to get an oblong one not a square one so it may be a littel bigger.... maybe 2 x 1

I have one of those duct silencers and all they do is reduce turbulence in the air.  It actually makes a noticeable difference to the volume of noise of the air exiting the ducting but they're far from worth the money.  You could honestly get the same effect gluing a bunch of maccas straws together and stuffing your ducting with them like a plug.

The best advice I could give is get the strongest and biggest fan you can afford for your grow area and dial it back using a fan speed controller.  Larger fans move air far more efficiently than smaller ones which means you don't need to run them nearly as hard to move the same amount of air and in a larger duct air will also move at a much lower pressure drastically reducing the need for a duct silencer.  That lower pressure also means the ducting vibrates considerably less which is a massive source of noise.  Even with insulated ducting a ton of noise is produced so having a lower pressure makes a huge difference.

You will also get a humming sound, caused by the fan speed controller, that is pretty hard to silence. If you must use a speed controller, don't run any slower than 25%, not good for fan motors. Don't know of any fans that come with built in speed control, there are some tutorials here to help you build your own fan speed controller, but when it comes to electricity, if you don't know what your doing, don't fuck with it - it can kill you, or burn your house down

You cant go past building a silencer box for your fan, as mentioned with eggcartons, carpet, foam, etc.. I was told for the best soundproofing you need the eggcarton shape to capture and reflect the high end, and you need density (carpet, doona, etc) to muffle the low end

using acoustic ducting can get expensive, I wrap my ducting in a layer of wall insulation..

I found that when I installed my carbon filter, that acted as a silencer, reducing the noise of the air rushing into the duct

my growroom is under my house, when standing inside, directly above fans / ducting, can barely hear the noise, no louder than the fridge

when I had a speed controller slowing fans to 50-75%, could hear the humming all over the house

best of luck midget
