How much to water?

Recommended Posts

Mate they're not gonna finish any faster, you could start them off under a 60W household incandescent bulb for the first week of their life and it probably wouldn't make a difference. (I'm not suggesting this because it's a bad choice, CFL is what we use.) No one starts off so few seedlings under such powerful lights, they can't use all that energy mate, it's just a waste.

Pegz I am just going by what I have read from others posts and research through the forum. Reffering back to Buzzo, he starts and finishes with a 250w HPS in his grow fridge, I have a tent which is at least double the size so I just doubled the light, I could have put in a 400W bulb as I have one and my ballast is adjustable but the cool tube is taped up at both ends to ducting and it would be a stuff around to swap them out.

Fair enough, HIDs are not well suited to the job but it's your grow. :)

Im using HPS not HID pegz, as its my first grow I just thought id stay basic and run the same light through giving me less chance to stuff up. Hopefully using the HPS through the whole process might give me a bit more yield or better bud who knows until I do a side by side I wont know but all in due time, like a kid before xmas at the moment just excited to see something come out of the ground at all! Hope I come even close to Billygoats first grow yield wise! so far they are good and the Pandora came up today :D

What I have noticed immediately is hoe different strains grow differently the Pandora has come out looking the thickest stem wise while the widow is medium and purple is tall, they are all under the same light and nutes so I don't think its the conditions! Second set of leaves are showing on the widow and purp which is promising and they don't seem to mind the nutes early on!

So at what stage would you suggest moving from a CFL to the HPS? You say they cant use all that energy, but surely the HPS is giving off a different spectrum, and also more lumens which can only aid in development? Even if a lot of the light is "wasted". Some evidence to support your theory would be helpful :). Cheers, Billy.

The will do fine under a household CFL for the first 1-2 weeks, if you keep it no more than a few inches away it will bath them in light and you will know if they need more light because they will stretch. If you want red spectrum light buy a warm white CFL (2700k,) it's close to the same spectrum as most HPS bulbs. After 2 weeks I put mine under an Phillips 80w CFL ( 6500k) which is not a household item, its a proper grow light for vegging and then under HPS when they're ready to start flowering.

HPS is the amazing for flowering, but it's shit for propagation because its just massive overkill and you have to manage the heat, the noise from the fans, the low RT due to the heat, the electricity bills, etc.

I'll post a pic of my setup when my phone recharges, might give you guys a better idea of what you can get away with. :)

Yeah I know mate, I was the same my first grow, I made mistakes then and I still make mistakes, like we all do.

I think in future grows you'll see how this or that can be done differently or cheaper, but yeah have fun with it, that's what matters.

Thanks Pegz and Mongy, like you said that's what its all about, having fun and hopefully enjoying some nice smoko in the end! I'm hoping to achieve about an ounce a plant as its my first grow I think this is reasonable to hope for?? As long as I get enough smoko to the value of my electricity usage ill be happy as im not here to make any money just rather grow my own than buy crap of the street and I will have a few flavors to try if all goes well!

Just an update I didn't get a chance to post pics yesterday but here they are, plants look like they have fallen over but its the fan going and I have now propped them upright with some wire to make sure they don't fall over. Lots of stretch in the purple and its the 2nd oldest, is this due to environment or just the strain as the widow hasn't shot up like that?? light is even above all 3 plants! What you guys think?

Widow 7 days, Purple 6 days and Pandora 2 days.
