Balls and hairs

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

I was hoping for some insight and advice around the dreaded H (ermie) situation.

Background Info- I have this plant (its a hermie that I have spent a fair bit of time removing the balls from) and as it is 1 of only 2 in this yrs crop.  I really want to keep what little product I get from them, and managing 2 plants hasn't bee too tricky.

So, the current situation is the hermie is showing quite good flowers  (this pic is from last week, and it is filling out nicely since)

However I looked at it today, and saw this.....both hairs from the lady, and possibly balls. Or is that another calyx which more lovely lady hairs will sprout from??

Will the plant continue to produce male balls through the flowering process, or once I have got rid of them all, there should be no more.

The second plant is looking a bit like this (no surprises if there is pollen in the air), so I will take to them both if they are pollen balls, or sit back and leave them if they are calyx.

Thanks in advance, all feedback comments welcomed.

Gender in cannabis isn't simple.  It follows the XX and XY chromosomes that are typically associated with gender but there is no such thing as an outright male or female plant as both genders are able to reverse sex and just to make things really interesting literally any combination of the two genders can be displayed on a plant depending on their genetic potential to do so.  For some plants that can mean a single banana after high levels of stress and/or chemical treatment to plants that naturally hermie and even worse is that the location or even how they look is never predictable.  Short of genetic testing all we can do is grow a plant out and keep an eye on them while hoping for the best.

Honestly though I think KRON is on the money with you mistaking female preflowers for male ones.  I looked hard for a ball and I couldn't see a single one.  Do you have any other pics that show the suspect flowers in greater detail?

ninja edit to say you should check for spidermites.  That leaf in the second pic is lookin a tad suss :(

Thanks Kron.

This one doesn't have pistle coming out of it at the moment, it's still closed. I have been removing a lot of them on sight, not allowing them to develop too much, as I thought they might be pollen sacs, and wanted to get rid of them ASAP. DAAAAMMMMMNNNNNN, does that mean I have been removing potential pistles/flowers all along?? Do these pre flower calxyes turn into smokable product?

Well, I guess you learn something new every day.

thanks

Thanks Doc, I will try and shoot some extra pics.  And yep, during the examination I was doing today, there are some mites there. I had a few of them a couple of weeks ago, blasted them with a chilli garlic spray that sent them packing, but appears they are back. :ack:

Bet those mites had a good feed since the #1 rule of cooking is to season everything lol  Spidermites need to be killed not annoyed.  Buy some bugs that eat them or a chemical that will kill them.

You didn't pick off anything worth smoking if they were indeed female preflowers.  The plants just put out a single flower at each node that typically goes nowhere.  They do make for big seeds if fertilized though :)

Exact same thing today on a sweet seeds fast auto.... I was going to defoliate crawling round in the tent, almost lost interest, then noticed this one lone ball sack on one of the lowest branches... Plant is definately female and well in to flower... Almost 1 m tall now.... Inspected the rest then gave up on my initial stupid idea... Pretty sure i got it early enough, did not look open... A

Its a commercially available product, and it seemed to work last time, so I'l try it again. With regards to bugs, which ones, and (keep in mind im newbie grower) do you have to net the plants to stop them flying away??
