I am very new to growing myself but from what I understand for our climate (I am not far from gold coast) It is to late to start for this season you will probably find they will only grow a few feet (at most) before going to head and budding so you wont get much off them, and it will be the same until around september when it starts getting into summer again. I beleive the ideal time to start is in mid-late september, which will give you a good 4-5months to grow them as big as you can before they flower in feb/march, generally ready for harvest end of april.

It's not hard mate. Just search through canaversity and you will find all types of medium to use. It looks like your potting mix is too hot for the seedlings. i.e. nutrient levels or whatever is in the dirt is too high for the seedlings.

 

Start them in seed raising mix and transplant when the are stronger.
