First timer - Setting up the tent ( lights and vent )

Recommended Posts

Hi guys first time grower here and have a few questions regarding the build of a grow tent. Im thinking of using a 1.2m x 1.2m x 1.8m tent but im unsure of what kind of lightning / heating / cooling setup i can use.

Ive done a quick MS paint in how i think it needs to be done, Does it look correct? Do i need another fan in there gently blowing over the top of the plants as well just to imulate a breaze or something ?
How bad would the smell actually get? this is just going into my shed and i was hoping to vent out of the tent and out the back of the shed, Will a carbon filter get rid of the smell? Some companies claim ZERO ODOR but im not sure if thats real?

or does it need to be a hardcore CFM ?

When using led lights do we need an external heat source? Ie: do the plants only need the light spectrum to grow or do they need heat as well ?
Sorry for all the questions, im a huge noob at this but i really want to give it a go!

Also a side question i know its not the right forum section but didnt want to go make another 2 or 3 threads... If i want more buds i want female plants correct? so do female plants create buds and male plants create seeds? or can female create seads as well and male create buds too ? can seeds from a male produce female seeds to grow more females? or am i better of chopping the top of the first female i get and cloning it ? does it have to be the top or can it be any branch that connects to a stem ?

In an ideal world you'd use a 600w HPS in that space and have it cooled using either a cooltube or an air cooled shade.  You'll definitely need a fan to simulate the wind and you'll need a decent extraction fan and carbon filter to deal with the smell.  ALL used air needs to be ducted completely away from the garden otherwise you're going to have a really bad time with heat, humidity, etc. making it not worth the time and effort to grow in the first place.

Don't buy LEDs or anything cheap off ebay especially growlush gear like that fan.  You only get what you pay for so invest in the system you really want now to save all the wasted time, money and effort from using cheap stuff.  It will cost a small fortune but once setup you're only paying operating costs which can drive the price of an ounce to well under $50 to grow so plan absolutely everything you can out now, save like mad and get the setup both you and your plants deserve :)

Hi thanks for the quick reply! ok so the light i linked to in the post should be ok to use in the 600w range then, I guess ill stay away from LEDS then, . So the little fans i posted above are no good then, What kind of CFM are we needing for this kind of setup? Also as i asked before to the plants actually need a heat source or just the correct lumens to grow ?

Im gonna go hunting around in bunnings tommorow for some stuff hopefully they have some carbon filters and some fans i can look at.

Hey herby,

Setup looks good. I believe there is a calculator in cannaversity for working out fan size. I'm not sure it takes I to account the carbon filter though. The local hydro shop would be a good place to get your gear, they'll generally match or beat prices.

Male plants produce flowers that pollinate female flowers. Female flowers are what we smoke. Female flowers produce seeds when polinated.

Good luck with it mate

if ur gonna buy so many of those little fans i would by 1 decent exhaust fan and maybe a small intake fan depending on where ur fresh air is coming from

check out my grow diary its a similar setup to the 1 your looking at doing

this was my first setup and grow

drop in a 600W; and keep the air moving.

A 600w hps will generate a ton of heat.  So much so that you'll want a shit ton of air flow to get rid of it.  I think my fan is rated at around 1100m3/h which i dial down for stealth reasons.

Bunnings will be of no help.  they like legit gardening, not suspect gardening lol

Would you say a 600 W is overkill ? i would like to get 3 if not 4 plants happening in this tent, should i go down to a 450w ? if i use more reflectors and position correctly maybe a 450W would suffice? also will a small 50w unit be ok for starting out? as in when i put my popped seeds in the smaller pots, and is it still a 18/6 cycle? Im gonna have a read through the stealth forum too as im still kinda shitting my self about this whole idea right now lol.

I went to bunnings today and tried getting some stuff to build my own "tent" or "room" and after wondering around for 30 minutes i ended up with a tonne of plastic connectors and 10 lengths of 3mtr pvc pipes and some white plastic sheet and a few other bits and pieces, i ended up just dumping it all at the back cause it seems like to much of a head fuck, went strait to a hydro shop down the road and picked up a 1.4mx80cmx2.0m tent, its only a seahawk but it actually looks really nice and it has all the ducts in the right spots, they were also super helpfull with advice on lighting and stuff and didnt have to ask me what i was growing, they reccomended the 2x2x3 but it way to expensive and also to big for where i want to put it.

Yup ended up going to hydro shop instead, way easier. Ill check out that calculator but i think i should be fine as long as i just keep the air moving and circulating. Also when you say female plants product seeds when polinated, does that mean it wont create buds too? or can it make both ? im aiming to make enough seeds to keep growing without having to order seeds every 6 months but i also wants maximum buds more than anything. ( i think we all do? )

Yeah they have a few good fans at this hydro shop but the biggest thing for me is noise, i want to keep it to a minium so i cant go and use a big extractor fan, Will check out your build , i want to start a build thread to but at the moment its just the tent hehe once i start with something ill put it up.

Also as i asked above can someone shed some light on why led lights are not really used ? from what i can see they would eliminate the heat problem ?

yeah a 400w hps should be fine in that tent.  a 600w hps would be better but you would still have a well good time with a 400w hps in there.

Will see if they have them at the shop when i head down there next, On the website they only list the 600W , so for now it looks like im gonna go for the 600W @ 190$ with balast and shade, unless the 400w is alot cheaper  ( like 100$ or something ) then i will downgrade.

Also thinking of getting 2 x 150mm Can-Fans , one for intake and one for exhaust, But they are pretty expensive @ 198$ each, there is also the EZI AIR 150mm Fans @ 92$ each that wold be cheaper to get but am unsure if they are any good.
