Hard Drug Use Blammed On Cannabis

MURRAY Bridge police have discovered an in-creased use of hard drugs in the area recently.

While it is no worse here than other regional South Australian towns, police have stepped up their approach to the situation by trying to curb the deals early on.

Police believe the increase in hard drugs has stemmed from people over-using cannabis to such an extent where they do not feel the same "buzz" and instead resort to harder drugs.

Acting officer in charge Sergeant Michael Towie said the situation had become somewhat of a cycle.

"It is a cyclic thing where cannabis dealers get money but are going on to buy speed deals and other hard drugs, so the money from the crops are feeding that," he said.

"People have also become sick of cannabis and aren't getting the same buzz and with these hard drugs being forced around they decide to give that a go."

In a bid to combat the problem police are attempting to start at the beginning of the cycle, by targeting known dealers, manufacturers, sources and buyers - and curbing marijuana sales that way.

"We have stepped up the way we deal with our approach this," Sgt Towie said.

"We look to identify dealers, a lot of this with the assistance of the community, and then build on the picture all the time to determine exactly what is going on."

Sgt Towie said it was important community members report anything suspicious, and should remember they can keep their name confidential.

"Remember, if it concerns somebody who doesn't get paid to deal with it, it concerns us because we are paid to deal with it," he said.

"Whether it is 3pm or 3am it is our job to deal with these cases."

:) I surely hope someone there is writing to the editors of local papers and local politicians educating them on the facts. If cannabis were legalised- there would be no money in it for the drug dealers who would withdraw from the pot market thus: making them an easier target for law enforcement. Chemical drugs SHOULD be illegal, pot SHOULD NOT be illegal. People are surprised at how much influence the pot culture, especially the medical communities are having on policy-making around the world. Folks are seeing that their money could be better spent by NOT arresting their families. LET 'EM KNOW!

Darn authorities spreading opinion again, instead of researching thoroughly.

I'm sure many of us can say (from firsthand experience) that Cannibus usage does not lead to hard drug use, those who were going to indulge in hard drugs would anyway.

Yet, if Cannibus were legalised it would stop the access to hard-drugs from those just seeking to use Cannibus because the black market element would be removed.

Just my 2 cents.

Yes I agree with you all. People who are going to run on heavy fuel, will do so regardless.

Yeah, it's amazing how authorities "tell us" what we think isn't it? We need to have citizen initiated referenda, and in a "democracy" (what a joke), CIR should be the first thing to happen whenever there is talk of policy and/or law changes/reform, but is there? NO! and why? Because this is not a democracy. In fact democracy is only a concept. True democracy doesn't exist.

I would heartily suggest that people have a read of "Saying Yes - In Defence of Drug Use, by Jacob Sullum.

The addiction rates and death rates of so called "hard" drugs are actually substantially lower than those we call "soft" like alcohol and nicoteine.

Using these selected "illicit" drugs for recreation isn't a "sin". It's something humanity has done for thousands, if not millions of years. Injesting products that alter our perceptions.

It's fun.

But to link one drug to another, like it's got some sorta mind control over the user... As if some teenager smokes a joint, and thinks, "hey, this pots speaking to me in my mind man! It's telling me to take acid and heroin and all kindsa weird stuff.... " :)

They've been lying to us for too long. It's more than time that the great lie of prohibition be cast aside for humanities greater good. It's only holding us, and our own understanding of ourselves, back.
