Police from Broken Hill have been involved in a trial of a new law targeting the movement of drugs across New South Wales borders and seized three kilograms of cannabis.

It was the first trial of the new law in the Barrier Local Area Command, based in Broken Hill and it allows police to stop and search any cars for drugs, not just those they consider suspicious.

The weekend operation involved Broken Hill detectives, the Target Action Group, highway patrol and Dareton police and they stopped 724 cars.

The operation was conducted between Gol Gol and Wentworth on the Sturt Highway near the Victorian border.

The searched 47 cars and a 30-year-old man is to appear in the Wentworth Local Court over the seizure of cannabis from his car.

Police can also run similar operations on the Barrier Highway near Cockburn.

Some of the biggest drug seizures on the highway and in Broken Hill have been from cars travelling from South Australia.

Here's an update.

Police crackdown nets big drug haul

Police have seized more than $800,000 worth of the party drug known as "ice" and nearly four kilograms of cannabis during a weekend operation at Tarcutta, in southern New South Wales.

The operation used trial legislation which allows police to search every vehicle entering New South Wales from interstate over a 72-hour period.

It also allows police to use sniffer dogs to search for drugs.

Police Minister John Watkins says that has upset some civil liberties groups, but the success of the operation shows it is necessary.

"The police asked for this legislation because they had intelligence that large amounts of illegal drugs were making their way across the NSW border," he said.

"It was thought that a fair amount of cannabis, in particular, was being trafficked into NSW."
