Fox tailing

Recommended Posts

The reason I say heat is because when there was a heatwave for a couple days of a few 30 and 40 degree days, I had that happen to me and nothing else had changed.

Humidity may also cause it, but its definitely not the only thing. Where I live, humidity is low and I have never seen my tent get over 45% (its usually 25-30)

It wasn't too much of an issue really as they did fill in again, it just made the bud I little longer and maybe not as dense as it could have been.

I would say it would definitely be different for each strain. I had a few of one strain in the same tent, some did it, others handled it, so its even different for individual plants of the same strain.

Looking good though

lol that is low dude, mine used to be about 60% lights on and 85-90ish at lights off. With the new fan its now down to low 40s.

I assumed it to be humidity as my temps stay below 35 deg C in summer and I did get some foxtailing in winter grows (pineapple chunk comes to mind). But thinking about it yeah mainly in the warmer weather, when temps and RH are high.

Offroad is right, 45% is getting a bit low. Not so much that it will do damage, just means the girls will drink. If there drinking heaps of water they will not eat as much food, so just you EC in your res sometimes can go up.

Besides heat, the type of light your using can sometimes cause fox tailing, stretching. While HPS is the most common light that everyone uses. It can cause stretching due to the lack of blue light in them. It is more seen in veg stages but can also be seen in flower.

The guide I work off is 60 - 70% Hps to MH. So if your running a 1000W Hps a 600 MH side light is good. If your like me and only run main light and not side lights due to heat, I have 4 lights and 2 of the lights are MH. After a week or so I change the MH over to a Hps and the Hps to a MH. This is only in flowering, in veg I run 4 MH.

Yes Chopper I know my humidity is very low but there isn't really anything I can do about it.

My tent is too small and any humidity I manage to create is sucked out within minutes. I will keep in mind what you say about drinking more water than nutes though.. :D

Cheers

Hello .... I havent read the whole thread but on the foxtailing subject ............

I've had a strain that always "fox tailed" ( we use to call this donkey d*ck when I was younger) , it was white rhino , while other strains in the same tent with the same nutes with the same temp and humidity wouldnt do it .....

So my money would be on genetics ,  I think it might happen with the high temps / humidity but maybe wouldnt with perfect conditions ..... my tents use to run a little hot most of the time .....

Cheers :) Brimstond

For whatever reason the plant has responded to high levels of gibberellin. Ive had this happen before where one or two will foxtail from a bunch of identical clones. Next time you can nab this imbalance early by countering with a dose of auxin. Foliar application anywhere on the plant as the hormone is systemic. If you use too much though you can stunt the plant, and not enough, or too late, will have no effect. In the past I've used small amounts with stretchy strains I want to keep bushy and compact

my latest reading on the subject of fox tailing is caused by a few things one being light intensity

so diff strains in the tent wouldn't fox tail unless sharing a light source from 2 lights, as they grow closer to it

a plant placed in between 2 lights , apposed to directly under 1 light

never had anything fox tail myself

just a theory i guess
