Hormone blocks marijuana buzz

Recommended Posts

Washington, Jan 03 (ANI): It seems that researchers will one day be able to develop a pill to ward off harmful effects of cannabis after two teams of scientists discovered that pregnenolone, a molecule produced by the brain, acts as a natural defence mechanism against the harmful effects of cannabis in animals. Pregnenolone prevents THC, the main active principle in cannabis, from fully ...

Has anybody seen this recent news?

Active ingredient in pot sets off a feedback that reduces intoxication

So, if I'm reading it correctly, there seems to be a kind of limiting factor which prevents weed from getting you more and more high after an initial hit. I've found this to be the case with my own experience - once I get high, after a few hours I find that I can't get any more stoned no matter how much I have. I need to wait for a fair while and sober up before trying again. Some people talk about 'smoking yourself sober' and such.

What do you guys all think? Have you had similar experiences?

It makes me think that, in a way, this is kind of a good thing, since it prevents weed from becoming a truly dangerous compulsive drug habit like some of the more conventionally condemned substances such as heroin or cocaine etc.

Maybe - but this is research in mice and we've learned the hard way that a lot of things in mice are different from humans eg - about 20 years of basically useless investment in research on inflammation in mice

What you describe doesn't need a new mechanism because cannabinoid pharmacokinetics and in particular receptor saturation probably accounts for it - if you take a good hit of high THC material, you get buzzed because most receptors are activated - but once you get there, more intake doesn't make much difference because there aren't many receptors left to fire off and it takes many hours for each receptor to become ready to fire again. So, as you know, 24 hours later, you are good to get a decent buzz again. I was always surprised at how hard the bong smokers in those amsterdam coffee shops would go at it - literally 3 or 4 grams of very strong hydro at a session - but when asked, they admitted that they were not getting much more buzzed after the first few hits - it was the ritual they were enjoying I think.

Interesting to compare with alcohol (ethanol) - there aren't any recognised alcohol receptors AFAIK but it has really toxic effects on just about every tissue, especially the brain - after a glass or two, it screws up the delicate workings of the outermost part of the cortex and with more booze, more bad toxic effects appear until the drinker falls over comatose - which seems to be nature's way of saying you've probably had more than enough.

Whether there are other things going on such as the mechanism they found in mice is not yet known AFAIK - but always remember, no matter how wierd things get after a bowl or two, you're a (wo)man not a mouse...

Yes, it's interesting to consider that some of the heavy users of cannabis might actually be wasting a good portion of their stash, ultimately. This is one of the reasons why I posted this article - if it helps people stretch out their supply more effectively in lean times, then so much the better!

 Amen to that bro.

I think vaporizing rather than burning also helps stretch the available material - sure it's a very different experience from a bong or blunt, but I've found I vape about half the material I would have combusted for a given state of buzz with an efficient device like the Solo. YMMV.

Hmm. What do you use to vape with? Do you use an MFLB? I've been thinking of buying one. I made a kind of cruddy one from a light bulb and some tubing (based on tutorials from youtube) and it works OK, but I have found I need to use much more weed to get the same high as smoking. Maybe I'm not doing it right. How much do you crush your herbs up for your vaporiser? Do you go very fine?
