Legal pot plan up in smoke

Recommended Posts

Australia might get something likes this one day but not for a very long time maybe 10 to 20 years  if were lucky. just seems Australia is a bit behind everyone else.

The proud but cynical Australian in me takes a sigh and thinks "yep, you're right.  A lot of the time we drag our feet on some of the most important world views"

Why is that?

I think perhaps, for a long time us aussies have been a pretty relaxed and forgiving people.  More likely to get on with our lives and enjoy the finer things about this great place. Our politics therefor have either reflected our attitudes or in some horrifies cases our points of views have been ignored with the expectation that sooner or later we'll just "get on with it". However,  times have changed and so have our tolerance for political BS. I know there's that small voice that proclaims defeat based on our previous cannabis battles, but its important (very important) to push it aside and if you believe something is wrong put your fist down.  Theses law are broken, we have been lied to and propaganda has been allowed to run amuck!  Australians are some of the highest consumer of cannabis, so you'd think we'd have to loudest voices. But loud voices & cannabis use to often do NOT go hand in hand. The good new is that the world view is changing, people a demanding their individual rights. Who can make these changes in Australia?? Politicians?? Law enforcement?? People outside the community?? of corse none of these.  The responsibility lies directly on our shoulders. Your shoulders. Seeing & hearing the "10 to 20 years" attitude saddens me (so much so, i have to join every community i can). why should it take this long.  Why should we be once again behind the times. This time its not just our slow internet and ageing telecommunication infrastructure.  This time to the detriment of our aussie brethren.

I'm super excited to be reading any article debating legalising cannabis. Its a debate that can only go two way, either swept under the rug or we win.  the mounting evidence for the befits of cannabis can no longer be ignored. All we have to do to win this debate is keep a positive attitude and keep the conversation going. Who but us can see see when the conversation is waning. We can no longer stand and wait for other countries to excited our own nation dialog.

If our voices are loud enough we can make anyone hear us.

"Good luck to them in Colorado - not going to happen here," - Wanna bet??

Ok, so what's the plan?............................................................................................................................................ you don't have a plan do you?

Listen up.

The law regarding cannabis needs court action, if you want to do something useful get yourself along to your local courthouse and offer your support whenever someone is going through court on pot charges. The Lismore courthouse for example has seen plenty of activism over the years and so have many other courthouses.

The paperwork needed is here at OzStoners forums, all it needs is the right delivery. Go for it.

absolutely I have a plan.

3055 posts, you must have been a part of this community for a long time and seen people get riled up (& perhaps unfortunately fizzle out). I'd also love to be a part of it. If you could tell me what actions you've taken perhaps i could add them to my approach, perhaps to achieve a better and more direct result. As for today: I plan on changing my role from a sub active to super active role. I don't want to live one more day with these antiquated laws. Thank you for your answer and your ideas to the pot, like i stated its discussion and a show of hands that'll bring forth change. Today i put my hand up.  I found & wrote to my local representative through http://www.aph.gov.au/Senators_and_Members/Members. I found their twitter accounts (in the hope of finding their personal email addresses).  I would really like to get my hands on Journal of General Internal Medicine, as there's been a recent (september 2013) posting which contains findings about the detectable association between frequency of marijuana use and health or healthcare utilisation. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ 2.9 million articles, perhaps you could help me find it??  You seem like a very active member. Perhaps even a link to "the paper work needed". If you don't feel like you are the right person to make something happen (which I think you are) I can help, in whatever small way to find the right delivery".  I absolutely agree that we need action, but in Australia we have a fundament devision of parliament & the judicial system, in other words we can’t/don't have judges making laws. The action needs to first happen through state & federal government.  The courts will then enforce their laws. So although i think your ideas are well meaning, i don’t believe (nor do the judges) that they’ll help achieve the desired results as efficiently as influencing policy & decision makers.

Good to hear Fermit  hope you stick with it.....we see alot of people come and go here who are going to change the world. Most are just blowing their own trumpet though unfortunatly. The rest are diligently out there still making changes slowly. Wont be long and the illegal cannabis house of cards is gong to fall thanks to them. :bongon:

The Single Convention that Australia is signatory to allows for the medicinal use of cannabis and opium. Not only does it allow for it but it requires the government to implement a regulatory body to oversee any cannabis or opium production. The Therapeutic Goods Administration is that government body and is whom big pharmacy apply to for registration of their cannabis/opium products, all 100% totally legal.

The government will try and keep the genie in the bottle for as long as it can in regards total legalisation, but in regards to medical use, if all conventional means have been exhausted and that evidence is produced along with a physician to back up the health benefits to the individual, then the courts will have no option than to aquit.

Your plan must have the following… but I'm sure you already have these in your plan

  • Evidence based, with references and recent ones too… google will not cut it
  • Stakeholders to influence change… Nimbin residents do not count
  • Organizations and individuals with experience in implementing whole-of-government policy change… can't do it on you own
  • Financing sources…. can't do it on you own (well maybe if you are M Bloomberg…?)
  • Epidemiological numbers - to assess your pre & post-implementation measurements… lots of numbers in a country-wide policy implementation project
  • risk mitigation strategies… there will always someone trying to ruin your work… Jan for one
  • Stakeholder engagement… piss them off and you are over with
  • Communications plans… pain in the arse they are
  • Modes for Evaluation… again numbers and lots of them.
