Meanwhile in New South Wales proposed new laws could give police wider search powers against terrorist suspects.

Revealing details of the new terrorism police powers bill, Premier Bob Carr says the special provisions would have to be triggered by the police commissioner in the event of a specific threat being received.

They would only be valid for seven days leading up to a suspected attack and for the following 48 hours.

Police would have the power to conduct searches of all people, vehicles and premises deemed to be in a target area, or which they believe may be linked to possible terrorist activity.

The Premier says there are no increased powers of detention under the bill.

Now most of these new law proposals are perfectly understandable given the current situation with terrorist activity and we fully support them, but why the need to search all people, vehicles and premises deemed to be in a target area as well as terrorist suspects?

Is the threat of terrorism also being used as a good excuse to create a gestapo police force in NSW?

I guess I would accept it if a condition of the legislation does not allow charges for any non-terrorism offense uncovered by searches under this legislation.

but at the end of the day criminals like us can't blame the police if we are busted. I sure as hell don't want a society where certain groups decide they are not going to obey laws they see as unjust with the police nodding in agreement.

With the threat of terrorism in the current political atmoshpere these type of laws are to be expected. The whole face of warfare has changed with terrorism. Instead of an army these people put a bomb in the back of a car park it and walk away.Detection before the act is the only way to prevent a tragedy. Unfortuanetly it puts people such as us in the way. If pot was legal it wouldnt be a worry.
