Removing fan leaves

Recommended Posts

Hey guys as seen in the last post she bushed up well after her 1st defoilation, so much so that I gave her another trim today. Another 200 plus leaves removed. Only 16 days since I last trimmed  her but she needed it again! Less shade now which hopefully will give me more new growth and more new bud sites joining the top canopy. I'm really happy with how she responds to this method of training. Still using LST also. Pics taken today straight after trim.

Peace All

:pizza:  reasonably healthy looking plant for sure... I say reasonably as the leaves look just a little heavy, maybe a little too much water/drainage?... good size though and nice sativa-ish leaves, yep she'll be a beauty in full flower come harvest.

One problem with growing around the house is stray light not letting the plant flower properly, so keep an eye on that after Xmas

As far as removing fan leaves, yes I think it's a good idea when they've finished serving their purpose... the big ones off the main stem/main branches for example, once they have done their job and produced the energy for the branch to gain full height ready to flower, then I think they have served their purpose, are mostly shaded by that stage, and will fall by themselves come flower anyway, which leads to the next stage, the next group of fan leaves off the base of the main colas... you can see when these have reached the end of their useful life and are getting ready to fall as the stem turns purple as the potassium is taken out of them and used in the flowering process.

That leaves the fan leaves off the base of individual buds,.. depending on the structure of the plant if they can't be tucked away and still remain useful I will sometimes trim those however I think those ones come at a cost to flower production, size and length/girth, come harvest if they are taken too early.

Turned into a real bush since you cut of the top.

You might have to start supporting the side branches when in flower........ :greedy:

Yeah she has, cutting off the top was great advice. Thanks Train Wreck

Thanks for your post bm. Yeah she was watered not 5 mins before the pics taken. I'm thinking drainage may become an issue because there is only 1 drainage hole in the centre at the bottom of the pot, I've been thinking of drilling a few extra holes to help prevent and problems further down the track.

Thanks for your detailed description on the purpose of fan leaves through the plants life, it was an interesting read.

Peace

Lotsa drainage holes is as important as a well draining medium... :)

One of the strains I have, It is advised by the breeder to help yields, remove shade leaves in flower due to them blocking light as they get really big........ :greedy:

Kona Sunset

This plant is impressive in it’s structure and looks, and offers a great
yield both indoors and out. Great for S.O.G. Huge leaves that are great for cigars.
Indica Dom but has a wonderful balanced warm high that sends you right to a beach on a big island.
A very happy high with a wonderful taste of the islands tinged with a wonderful sweetness from
the Dark Cross male which also gives the buds their stunning color.
Dark Cross was created from my Zinn with my Lava and also my 30 year old Mom Gooey.
A very impressive male with the darkest purple coloring and stunning resin profiles
which add nicely to the Kona line, Making Kona Sunset a high end must for those seeking flavor and high.

Growing Tips: These love root space so give them as much as you can.
Not overly nute sensitive and grow fastest outdoors
The Zinn can slow this line down in some phenotypes. Misting with lite nutes helps speed things along.

Trim off the largest fan leafs when in flower as they get huge and block loads of light to the flowers.
This will help yields.
