Insomnia and strains that help

Nancyness

Question

Howdy all

So I suffer insomnia pretty severely. Most nights I get between 90 mins and 2.5 hours sleep. The rest of the time I lay there tossing and turning trying to sleep.

My insomnia is eased by a cocktail of sleeping tablets and muscle relaxants but the next day it renders me useless for driving and sometimes I can't even hold a conversation because my head is so scattered and strange.

HOWEVER I have noticed a change to my sleeping patterns since becoming a daily smoker. Depending on the quality of weed I can get my hands on, my quantity of sleep is greatly improved. No struggle to sleep! My eyes are closing before my head even hits the pillow. That hasn't happened naturally since my late teens.

So I have been researching strains that help with insomnia. There are thousands...... And I get confused looking at all the names over and over so I was hoping someone here may have experience in growing strains to directly combat insomnia. Or knows which strains are the best for this.

I normally more enjoy a Sativa type high but when it comes to bed time I'm assuming I need a knock out Indica.

Any suggestions would be awesome. Even if you have a suggestion that isn't cannabis related I'd still be willing to give it a shot.

Cheers in advance guys

Nance

Hello,

I also suffer from insomnia among other things and have found that Indicas are by far the best to find sleep when i cant with the addition of all natural melatonin I quickly find sleepy. There are so many strains available that sometimes it isn't easy to find one that fits what exactly ale's  you but as a rule of thumb I like to look at the bud I am looking at under a small hand held microscope specifically made for viewing the small hairs on the bud and have found that when looking at the hairs if they are of a clear brownish or clear amber coloring are the best ones and have greater THC content that will give you that full body high that makes feel sleepy. I hope this helps you with your insomnia and you find some good deep sleep because a good night sleep makes a world of difference.

Insomnia is a tricky beast.  I found for me I needed to stop smoking 30-60 mins before bed and then go through a routine to prepare my brain for sleep.  It took a bit to sink in but now when I see that its time to go to bed my body instantly reacts like out of nowhere needing to pee and once I've made it into bed it only takes around 5 mins to get to sleep.

When it comes to strains it doesn't overly matter that much.  Sativas need to be stopped smoking well over an hour before bed to get over their perkiness and indicas can be smoked up until the minute I go to bed.  I never get quality sleep going to bed high as a kite though and wake up feeling seedy as which is why I stop smoking just before bed.  It gives me time to start coming down and although I still wake up feeling a little seedy its nowhere near as bad and non-existent if I get to sleep in a little.  It also gives me a little high time to work through anything thats gonna keep me up like crazy relos giving me grief again which gives the brain a bit of a work out while bringing it some peace before going to bed.  Doing that clears my mind, the routine puts it in the mood to sleep and by going to bed coming down I get a better quality sleep as well as getting up better the next morning.

Best of luck finding something that works for you nancy.  Insomnia is a royal bitch of a problem :(

I also have sleep difficulties, but I believe this is more due to pain. But heavy duty pain meds at night give me one hell of a hangover in the morning. And I don't need assistance in feeling like shit in the morning

I have found that hash oil at night works a treat, it relaxes both mind and body. I won't say I sleep right thru the night, but getting back to sleep after waking isn't as difficult and I awake a little more refreshed.

you do realise this is an Australian site and cannabis is not legal here...

just stating the obvious

Kind of makes me a bit jealous, though - wouldn't you agree? In some parts of the US they literally walk into a store and buy a bag of buds same as a bottle of wine. I honestly can't believe that the US is more permissive than AU in this regard. Makes me feel like I'm living in Saudi Arabia.

Hi Nancyness. I'm really sorry to hear about your insomnia. I've had that problem too when things were going crazy for me at work with some social issues that were just plain ugly. All resolved now, thankfully, but it's incredibly distressing to not be able to get to sleep. The loneliness of insomnia is terrible too. Just sitting there watching shitty TV all night while everyone else is comatose. It is awful.

Personally, I have found that sleeping tablets and muscle relaxants etc. make me feel absolutely terrible the next day, so I now avoid them and would rather simply deal with having less sleep. However, I know how it is when you get desperate and will do anything for a snooze.

Yeah no sleep is a killer. It messes with my head more than alcohol and drugs! Makes me do and say some really stupid shit lol

Ever since having a baby in 07 I've had HORRIBLE sleep patterns. Can't get to sleep before 3 most nights then I'm mostly up before the sun again.

It's so strange - I've got a friend who said that her sleep was fine until she had a baby, and ever since then she's had terrible insomnia on and off for years! Really weird. I guess that the whole process changes your body permanently. I have no idea what the evolutionary benefit of this might be.

My Suggestions

Apart from plenty of lovely weed, I strongly suggest getting some really serious exercise. I have found that this has helped me with my sleep patterns a great deal. Walking and stuff like that doesn't cut it. I found that I needed serious heart-pounding exercise like running to truly exhaust me. You should give it a try. It doesn't need to be every day - I only run a couple of times a week, but it has made a big difference.

Furthermore, are there stressful elements in your life that are causing you anxiety? That might be an overlooked element which is undermining your ability to relax. If so, you should make changes to get rid of them. Life is too precious to waste it being anxious and unhappy.
