Its been proven countless times that piracy actually generates more money for the studios as most pirates are willing to actually buy the content if its good.  The issue they have is that they want to make sure its worth paying for first while the studios want us to pay no matter what.  Artists make like 20c per CD so even becoming a cultural phenomenon and selling albums like breaths of air isn't likely to net them that much income.  More often than not their income comes from merchandise, especially t-shirts, at concerts which again pirates are actually more likely to buy than the average person is.  Same thing goes for tv shows, movies, games, etc. pirates consistently spend more money on content but only after confirmation that its worth buying.

 

On a side note pirating content in Australia is a civil matter until you start distributing said content.  That means that it isn't illegal to download anything at all regardless of how often piracy is touted as illegal downloading.  The worst that can be done is that you are taken to court and sued for damages which will amount to the cost of the goods + legal fees.  If you sell burned dvds at the markets you will end up in a whole heap of legal issues but provided you don't do that, purposefully upload content like cams of movies still at the cinema, etc. you will never have a single legal issue what so ever from being a pirate.

Laws are but a restriction placed on their fellow man for the benefit of society. Problem is we are born into these societies and thrust by participating we sign a social contact.

 

As for the internet it may play a very serious role in the development of our planet/species but that doesn't mean it has to be as fucked up. In conclusion by restriction the internet we are making the same mistake that stop individuals 

from contributing their thought to the the great sea of consciousness that will one day allow people to think on a greater plan.
