How do ya stop the dust getting in your buds?

Recommended Posts

I live in a windy dustbowl and have a few outdoors on the go.  Beginning to wonder what I might do to prevent dust getting into the buds on days when it really blows.

I imagine it would stick to the buds and be hard to wash off with a watering can!

Anyone got any tips to counter the windy element?

i never had that problem or even thought about. do you live in the desert?

wish i could be of help but i really can't think of any ways to stop it, other that building some kind of barrier around the plants out of something like shadecloth. not very stealth...

very interested to hear what others say.

good luck.

ha ha - yes it feels like the desert some times.  We are on a farm in north central Vic and when it blows [as it tends to do through spring and summer] we get dust storms.  The dust is very penetrating and gets in the house despite it being closed up so I suspect will be a very real concern for my buds.

The red dust of the Malleee! Just hose it down after a storm, rain would do the same thing.

Or get some clear plastic, like drop sheets from hardware store, if you know when a big blow is coming rig something up so you can throw the plastic over the plant in a short time. You will never stop it completely but it will have some protection.

The only anecdote I have to add is that dust destroys everything! I remember being caught in a dust storm. The dust penetrated everything and ended up wrecking up camera. Dunno how you could stop it. Move to a greener location?

Just driving along those dirt tracks up around that way, without a storm, is a nightmare. Getting the dust out of body orifices and hair takes a month of Sundays.

Yeah mate, I know what you mean. The interior of my car is still covered in a film of dust from trying through inland QLD last summer. Not to mention what it was like to blow my nose for a fortnight after!

i would consider that area desert! it's arid enough. how do you find growing out there? it's so dry and the soil is so poor.

Yeah Dynamin, shifted here from Adelaide 14 years ago and I consider it desert.  The soil is worse than poor and very very dry, hot  and windy!  Last summer we didn't get any rain at all.  Most years we get 1 or 2 really big summer rain storms where we get an inch or so of rain but for the most part it's bone dry.  I find gardening in general much more difficult here than it was in Adelaide.  I am just in the process of building some wicking garden beds for my veggies in the hope I can get some better results.

On the plus side, I am getting some good exercise trying to dig holes in the clay!

On the down side, I have to grow my plants in the bush on our property but won't be able to hose them down after a dust storm so will have to try some preventative measure like throwing some plastic over them.

do you mind if i ask why you moved there? whenever i travel to the country and get to areas like where you live, i can never fathom what on earth makes people stay there. it's so harsh and unforgiving. i love visiting places like that, but living...that's a different story.

how about using a pressure sprayer instead of a hose? you can get those ones meant for herbicides that are worn like packs.
