I used to do a lot of work in the bush and often got them on me... at times up to 30-40 in a day of the small "grass ticks".  the best way i found was to use the cream type rid, not the spray.

the cream is also great for getting rid of them once they are on, just rub a dab on them and they will be dead and laying in your bed in the morning !  be very careful removing them.

Ticks, leaches and mozzies  are part of the game. Have had zillions of them over the years and apart from the bloody itchiness haven't had any other problems.

Just pull the ticks and leaches out when you find them and don't worry about the myth about the head staying in your body. Also about  lyme disease which is NOT in Australia, you have way more chance of caching ross river fever from the mosquitoes.

Brew garlic and birds eye chilies. Allow to cool. Strain out solids (don't discard). Put fluid into spray bottle and use as spay-on repellent. Warning; if spray causes burning sensation, water it down some. Critters don't like it at all. And take the solids you strained out and spread it around your plants, amazing how much that reduces the peskies!

hey clone cowboy ive bought the creamy stuff louise suggested works bloody well but like the sounds of what you saying works on the pests you get on your plants so why not those blood suckers dont know why i didnt think of trying the shit in me kitchen cupboard that costs nothing and i like the sounds of dropping the chunks around the bottom of me plants as a natural deterrent i do spray my young bush plants with chilli spray to keep the fluffy bunnies and what not from having a munch
