Why Turn Fans Off At All?

Recommended Posts

I gunna ask a stupid question here. I often read about thermostats, night fans, humidistats, etc. Is there any harm just leaving oscillating fans on the plant all day, during lights on, regardless of temperate, and just leaving the exhaust on all night, during lights off, regardless of humidity?

Interested in responses.Thanks

Firstly the only silly question is one you havent asked, thats what the board is for mate so dont be shy.

Is there any harm just leaving oscillating fans on the plant all day, during lights on

no harm at all, infact this is a requirement the osc fan is meant to be on at all times. It causes the leaf to shake a little and this in turn removes the stale air from around the plant.

It also strengthens the stalks so they can hold the weight of the buds.

and just leaving the exhaust on all night, during lights off, regardless of humidity?

An exhaust fan is also something that should always be running, it removes the stale air also, but if there is no ventilation when the plant is in full flower then this can cause Mould inside of the bracts.

I learnt this the hard way and my fans used to only come on when the temps hit 30 degs. my buds looked perfect UNTIL i harvested and the whole inside of the bud was mouldy, it cost me about 3 ozs in wasted bud.

Now I have 2 exhaust fans running, one is constantly running and the other only comes on when the canopy hits 31degs. that way im getting constalnt ventilation and the second fan controlls the heat in the room.

Thanks for all insights.Have seen various posts throughout this site advising members to have thermostat hooked up to fan so it comes on at 30 deg, I thought shit, I have always had mine on all the time, I'm probably drying the crap out of the buds! But my gut tells me to leave them on, and you have all confirmed that for me. Good on ya guys!

Grow hard!!

Valid point Jack, It appears that you use Co2?

If so whats it like? I thought about it but when I went to the shop to buy it the salesman talked me out of it.(believe it or not!, he had all the gear for sale too but reakons he doesnt sell it).

He claimed that he tried it for a year and that it made no difference in Flower, but the growth doubled in veg??

i dont use a osc fan.. used to but the plants stopped growing cuz of it.. i took it out of my grow and they shot up doin well now, chunky stems and gonna have some nice buds, heaps of budsites, so yeah maybe the fan was too powerful

EH, how did the fan kill your plants? I havent used one in this grow and cant say Ive noticed any difference, although I have a screen holding the flowers up.

Hey Ferenge,

Nah, It didnt Kill them, they just stopped growing. I dont have a scientific explanation for it but when i took the fan out they shot up and have been fine since. Like I said in my last post, Maybe that particular fan was just too powerful.... the plants were fine until they got taller than the top of the pot were the fan was blowing the most strongly on them when they were that tall they stopped growing for a few weeks. I experimented with a few things and since I took the fan out all good :D

The plants do get shaken gently by the vent holes and extraction fan though so I spose its the same effect.
