Jr Gets Oiled Again

Recommended Posts

A LIVER transplant saved Larry Hagman when doctors gave him six months to live.

But after going back to his old drinking ways, the former Dallas star says he doesn't deserve a second chance.

The 72-year-old star, who played scheming oil baron JR Ewing in the 1980s soap, has developed life-threatening problems with his replacement liver. He ruled out being given yet another one, as he is unwilling to deprive anyone else who might need it.

"I wouldn't have it even if it meant I had another 20 years," he said. "It doesn't scare me. You are going to die eventually anyhow."

Hagman had a liver transplant in 1995 after his own was riddled with cirrhosis and cancer. Doctors said the problems were brought on by 30 years of drinking.

At one stage he was spending $96,000 a year on champagne. He admitted boozing heavily on the Dallas set, but insists he cleaned up his act after the transplant and attended regular Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

But last year he was found to be a regular at a Los Angeles pub, where he regularly drank pints of beer.

He told an American magazine: "When the story came out, I had to go to my AA meeting, throw down the magazine and say, 'Here's what I have been doing'."

Hagman had surgery in December to remove a diseased part of the replacement liver. Aside from a second transplant, there is thought to be nothing more doctors can do.

The father of two, who has been with wife Maj for 50 years, said he had drawn up a new will.

He said that after his death "I would like to be minced then spread over half-an-acre of land. I want to spread some wheat over there and some marijuana seeds.

"At the end of the year, you harvest me for a huge cake - and serve it up for my birthday. I want a big party for guests to come and dance for three days."
