come learn with me. organic soiless mix or organic soil

Recommended Posts

well basically after the exceptional results i have had with my organic aquaponics producing terrific flavours i thought i might like to experiment with a few different organic soil and soiless mixes.

basically there are tons of great organic mixes getting around on the forums but trying to find ingredients or whatever over here can be tough so im going to attempt to create something using mostly ingredients from bunnings or local nurseries.

im going to attempt a coco based soiless mix loaded with natural composts and worm castings etc and similarly a traditional soil based potting mix with lots of organic ammendments. stay tuned.

any advice from anyone who has gone down this path already would be greatly appreciated

Debco organic potting mix and perlite, is what I'm using for the Afghani at the moment, both available at Bunnings. I went for Debco as I couldn't see a slow release fertilizer in the mix, as opposed to the Hortico and Osmocote mixes.

Look up Soma's super soil mix, I haven't tried it as yet, but I hear it's a fairly reliable mix if used correctly for growing organic:-)

im going to be trying 2 different mixes. one using a nice light potting mix as the base and the other i will use a bag of coco as the base.

im going to start by adding a bag of organic compost to each one, a handful of blood and bone, 10 kg of worm castings and a mix of olsens green bio and some cobra bennies.

i will grow a little auto northern lights x big bud in that mix and just watch it and see if and where it is lacking then i will adjust the mix and try again. it will be a work in progress until i hit the sweet spot

outdoors for autos ive had success with the following mix mushroom compost, perlite , vermiculite , charcol , blood and bone,  i think thats about it i got and outdoor auto diary from a couple of years ago with the ratios in it . Seems to work for me but if i was to do it again i would add some coco mix to it , and perhaps even some worm castings

Just dropped back in, need to share my findings on the last two grows.

This is only in relation to nutrients, but I will add that the soil blend was 30% coco, 30% perlite, with the remainder a blend of compost, potting mix and worm castings, but only a small amount due to availability.

The veg concoction on the first grow was 3ml medi-one, 3 ml power feed, to 1.5 ltrs of water. Every watering with a fortnightly flush. The second grow used a product called vitarich, found it at Masters, again, 3 ml to 1.5 ltrs, but I also added liquid potash, at half strength, or 1.25 ml per 1.5 ltrs. I only did this after studying the NPK ratios on the entire H&G range of nutes I have here. Figured the plants might be able to utilise a little more potassium during veg, and they responded well to the diet. I have also given them a dose of go go juice, a half strength mix every three weeks, for the entire grow.

The Flowering concoction is where I have made a huge improvement. First week of flower was veg blend, but second week of the first grow was 3ml medi-one, 9ml superbloom bat guano, to 1.5 ltrs. Turned out to be a nice finished product, but had no meat to it! Buds were the lightest I've grown, some of the crowns only weighed a few grams. Looked over the NPK and found the problem straight away, not enough K. This second grow, again, veg nutes for first week of flower, but this time round, 9ml superbloom, with half strength potash, or 1.5ml. The potash being used was manutec brand, N-0 P-2 K-14. Used this for the following 3 weeks, before upping the potash to full strength for a week.

During that week, however, I came across another liquid potash, but the NPK on this brand was what I was looking for as it has Urea in the product, giving it a small amount of Nitrogen. Bass is the brand, the NPK being 3.6-16.4-36.4. Add full strength superbloom to this potash, and I have a concoction with a NPK similar to the legendary Shooting Powder in the H&G range. Plants are loving it!!!

That's it, no bullshit, tis what I have found to work for my potted beauties, and I hope it helps some others to grow their plants a little better.

Overall weight from the last harvest was a whopping 163 grams!? Looking at it though, you would have sworn a pound and a half, looking forward to seeing what the weight will be this time around, I imagine the end product to be a better medicine as well, or at least I'm hoping so:-)

stage 1 is complete. i have my trial organic mix ready.

equal parts coco, earth worm castings, organic compost and some perlite makes up the base. then i added in a small amount of organic all in one and some seamungus granules along with some cobra bennies and some olsens green bio bacillus granules.

into the pot i placed a little of my soil mix to cover the bottom threw in a small amount of rocket fuel granules then filled the pot with my soil mix. i took out a scoop in the top and filled it with my seed raising mix (equal parts coco/EWC). i watered the whole thing in with some seamungus liquid and GoGo Juice.

i planted my seed and gave it a little drink to settle the mix around the seed.

now i wait and see whether or not its too hot or lacking in something. i doubt i got this mix right first go but i was at least very happy to see it drains really well and looks really rich and nice and to be honest to mix up a small amount like this for a single pot used very little of each component. i think if this works its going to end up being a very cheap way to grow.

oh and i have to add that i bought a small sample pack of the neutrog nutes with seamungus liquid and pellet, rocket fuel pellets and some gogo juice and im really happy with the way they look. i have a good feeling about those fertilisers. i have used gogo juice before in my organic teas for dwc and its excellent.

+1 Neutrog reads like the real deal and gogo is sweet.  Did a fair bit of reading on their website and like what I'm seeing too.  Pretty much buy it anywhere too!  Just flushing some cheap coco myself, perlite, 5 in 1 and some local guy potting mix that looks good-got a nice blend, also got some of his granular ferts which I'm gonna try out like yourself a little further down the pot.  Gogo, Seasol and fish emulsion to start-I'll take it from there.  I like your blend and gotta get a worm farm happening cos its hard to source for me.  Neutrog has a liquid seamungus too I believe and maybe a rocket fuel too-few additives but I'm going to be using these throughout the garden this spring/summer as well so.

I'll be potting up early in the week

Peace and good growing. v :sun:
