Need a simple good outdoor medium base please

Recommended Posts

Oh wait, now I get it.. so the the actual medium contains "nutrients"... and the soil buffers the PH. thus meaning there is no need to use seasol and products like gogo juice? is that correct????

Thanks for helping out the noob....

Im going to go out get a big tarp and start mixing for my 100L bag

Searles 5-1.

Coco

Cow Shit

Perlite

Blood and bone.

Dolomite lime

all mixed through in a tarp with a rake. equally... Now just to get the ratios right... Anyone have an idea what ratio to do?

Feed with straight tap water. The tap water around here is around ph 8. No seasol powerfeed needed as the medium contains all the goodies right?

Forgot to quote your other post but yeah I do germinate in this mix.

With seedlings I would just feed with water and maybe a seaweed additive if you want but they don't need powerfeed. After they are a few weeks old they would benefit from a light feed now and then when you water. I use Nitrosol sometimes and also home made compost tea.

Although plans will grow fine in this mix it's more of a good base to start with and work out a feeding regime that suits you, either adding to the mix or as I prefer currently now and then adding some kind of soluble nutrient to the water. Also outdoors it can be convenient to spread soluble powder on the ground and water it in.

Frank Reynolds suggestion of adding fungi and beneficial bacteria to the mix is a good idea too. MycoApply have a reasonably priced range.

Also I'm sure other people will have good suggestions too as I'm no soil expert.

The blood and bone and dolomite probably have directions on the bag,

G'day mate, go down to bunnings and get yourself some coco and organic potting mix/soil look for the certified organic symbol on the bag...then add coco you can use coco bricks if you want they are cheaper and easier to find. For better drainage add perlite in the mix or for water retaining add water crystals at the bottom. For a fert you want a slow release organic fert like blood & bone (no added potash) or composted bagged manure (chicken or cow). Most the time potting mix will have added slow release fert so you shouldn't need to add any extra ferts yourself. I recommended a potting mix/coco/perlite mixture then feed with seasol (seaweed extract or fish emulsion) only when it needs it. Keep it simple, look after your plants, water but only when thirsty & you should have some babies. Hope that helps

  • Organic Potting Mix (Certified organic)
  • Coco (Bagged or in a brick)
  • Perlie or Water Crystals (For drainage or water retaining)
  • Organic Slow Release Fert or Composted Bagged Manure (Only if potting mix doesn't have any)

Feed with Seaweed/Kelp Extract or Fish Emulsion (Only if plants need feeding)
