RACKS of power boards and a tangle of cords stretch from the floor to the ceiling. This is the heart of a multi-million-dollar hydroponic cannabis crop in suburban Queensland.

Police say 20 hydroponic set-ups are now being found a month as growers head indoors to avoid detection and to continue production year-round.

Detective Inspector Michael Trezise said elaborate electrical work discovered in some of the homes put unsuspecting neighbours at risk.

"Hydroponic cannabis requires large quantities of electricity,'' Insp Trezise, from the state drug squad, said. "Some offenders have manipulated the power supply, which is quite dangerous to both themselves and the community. They try to bypass the metres, which is particularly dangerous."

In one case this year a Brisbane electrician was charged after 450 cannabis plants were found in eight rooms of his Forestdale house and an adjoining granny flat. The electrician had wired the home to bypass the electricity meter to avoid detection.

Police discoveries have ranged from whole homes converted for cannabis production, to smaller operations with a handful of plants.

"Figures indicate that across the state on average, 20 hydroponic cannabis crops are located and seized each month,'' Insp Trezise said.

"The size and sophistication of the set-ups vary. Some were large and contained 100-plus plants. Some were small and contained a few plants. They were at varying stages of development."

The sophisticated indoor set-ups supply a booming demand for cannabis, which remains the nation's most widely used illicit drug. Cannabis use in Australia per capita is among the highest in the world and a new study this week found the potency is soaring.

Researchers found a THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) concentration of almost 15 per cent on average in seized cannabis. It was the first Australian research of its kind, but one US study 20 years ago found THC levels of just 3.4 per cent. High THC levels are associated with increased mental health problems.

Tests also showed seized cannabis had only minuscule levels of cannabidiol, a part of the drug thought to counter some of the negative effects of THC and have some therapeutic effect.

Study author Wendy Swift said no difference was found between the potency of cannabis grown indoors or outdoors.

"The large-scale producers are probably just in it for money,'' said Dr Swift, from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at the University of New South Wales.

"What seems to be popular in the market are the strains that have high THC.''

yep i actually have a pile of air ducting, empty nute contaners and a few pots out the front right now, and im actually glad i read this cause i just remembered i left the hose running!! i better go turn it off and take it out of the window and start using the inside taps.

luckily they didnt show what plants actually look like becuase i have 4-5 male plants sitting out by the bin that im going to get rid of on friday when the garbo comes. just couldnt fit them in the bin at the moment because its overflowing with all the empty ballast, reflector, lamps, fan boxes that are still there from when i set the whole rig up last year

 

the one good thing i did take from this though is i thought people might have started getting suspicous because for 12 hrs a day my grow house lights up like theres a space ship taking off inside but now i know that they will be watching for blacked out windows so im probably better off just leaving the blinds up.

Line & transformer losses far out way anything one single property can take off a single phase or 3 phase for that matter.

They simply can't track a grid loss.

Far more likely is the Police Helicopter High Definition full color FLUR they are using these days.

450 plants in 8 different rooms will make a house roof look like it's on fucking fire!

If you whole roof shows up on fire with the FLUR, that's all they need to get a warrant.

When it's a smaller heat signature, they then look for any credit card transactions linking to hydroponics

and that's enough for a Warrant.

Other things they are doing now is walking down the street in plain clothes

with the doggy looking for a scent. Not enough for a warrant but it's enough to make them

dig deeper.

 

Be warned everyone this is how they are getting so many grow busts.

 

I know this for a fact because I'm an Avionics Engineer and work on these systems.

 

After they bust you then its piss easy to see how the Meter board has been hacked.

One of the best ways to vent your Hydro hot air to to duct it to the eave of the house, preferably right near

an outdoor Airconditiing unit...That fucks em up cause the FLUR see's it alright but it shows up as a airconditioner

heat signature....Ha Ha Ha
