Marijuana Australiana documentary crowdfunding trailer

Hey Bitterman

Any news on ya flick mate ?

be very interested in having a look at ya work

Hey Itchy. We are still editing, doing very long days but it's finally taking shape. Just finished off the Mullum Madness section... it's all very epic. Filming is done except for some pick up shots. I think everyone here will enjoy the film very much, as will people who have no idea about cannabis. It'll be completed in approx 3 months if I can maintain the hard slog.

Most recently we filmed an 8 year old severely epileptic boy (Dravet syndrome) who's using tincture. The most recent news is that after seeing how effective it is for him, his neuro, surgeons, ICU and nurses successfully gained ethics approval to administer the tinc to him in hospital (previously his mother has been threatened with removal from the hospital if she continued administering the tincture to her son). This has huge ramifications on a number of levels as normally ethics approval of this kind is not given at all for using currently illegal drugs. Apart from a handful of scientific trials, I don't believe ethics committee approval of this kind has ever been granted. In this case though, it was life or death as opiate overdosing meant the kid stopped breathing. His offical med chart now lists medical cannabis alongside the pharma stuff he's on. Amazing. The entire medical team is now on board with cannabis and it would appear to set a precendent for others. This story is all in the film along with many others ;)

Sounds good Bitterman.

I'd like to know more about the ethics approval, which ethics committee approved this?

Glad someone gets it.

Jiggens pinched the title from the song by Brendan Hanley (later covered and popularised by the Bushwackers). I asked Brendan for permission to use it and got his blessing.

Nibbler, Not sure why you wish the Nimbin crowd luck? I live in Sydney's CBD and frankly, haven't gotten any love (quite the opposite) from various stalwarts of the Nimbin scene (Balderstone and Kavasilas are exceptions). There are many blinkered views in the world of cannabis and it seems everyone thinks they own the issue, when in fact it concerns more than 2 million of us. The factions I see don't seem productive to me.

I also understand the semantics of cannabis v marijuana, but if you watched the trailer you'd realise there is a nod to Reefer Madness in the title (as you can hear from Jiggens' own mouth). Not to mention it's a very commonly used form for drug cannabis still in use by those who need educating, a primary audience for the film (and it's still used by some who don't, eg. NORML, HEMP Party). It's also much catchier/memorable and describes what the film's about better than the previous title (which was a pun that missed its mark for non-pot people).

PS - The trailer is also on YouTube if you can't view elsewhere Nibbler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLUvgyzaeBU

Many thanks for the support bufo and everyone.

Edit: I have also tried to get people from OSA for an interview but there was some reluctance there, which is understandable.

Hey man damn i missed out on pledging as i definitely think this needs to be made and from the looks of it it will!

I agree that many australians need to be educated on cannabis, for a nation of stoners we sure lack education when it comes to our favourite plant. Many of my friends and associates throughout the years since i started smoking are massive stoners. They range from professionals with high end jobs to creatives who opted for the boho lifestyle yet a lot of them are so uneducated when it comes to cannabis.

To be honest so was I until i started growing.

The same goes for non smokers. The typical misconceptions and mistruths about cannabis are so prevalent in mainstream Australian society. It sure doesn't help having such a right wing conservative media.

The doco looks well made as well which goes a long way into making people want to watch it. I hope you can get a good audience and good luck getting it promoted and distributed as the story needs be told. If we are going to start a serious dialogue about moving forward in regards to the legalisation of cannabis people need be educated first and be allowed to form their own opinions.

good luck and well done! :)
