Growing and smoking in bedroom - How to deal with SMELL?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have recently moved back home with my parents after living independently for 6 years. They know I use cannabis, and they accept (or at least they say they do) that I use it for medical reasons. But that's not really the issue.

I am quite new to growing my own medicine as I have only had one small outdoor crop before and a series of failures with indoor grows. I currently have two very healthy looking females in the vegetative phase and they are ready to be put under 12/12 lighting. Currently they're concealed behind a curtain in my bedroom temporarily and I had plans to move them into a brand new wardrobe (the Pax system from ikea nonetheless!).

However, it turns out that my mum has real issues with the plants being in the house. This is mostly because of the smell (of the plants, and perhaps my smoking). But she is also concerned about her employment as a primary school teacher - I guess she's worried about colleagues or her employer finding out, and suffering repercussions because of it. I also have a young brother (5) who has friends over sometimes and mum is paranoid about the other mums finding out and judging her, ostracising her child and whatever else.

I honestly didn't realise the smell was such an issue, probably because I'm so used to it. I have an exhaust fan sucking air (and smoke) out of my bedroom window for now but the girls are starting to get really pungent and mum is not happy. I was planning on getting a carbon filter to install in my new wardrobe, which I explained to my parents. But they seem very sceptical about how well this will work, and think the plants need to go.

So how effective are carbon filters really? Can they totally remove any evidence of a stealth grow? And can they handle smoke as well or is there some other way to smoke discreetly inside?

Are there any other tricks that might be useful for my situation?

If I have my plants in a locked wardrobe to which only I had the key, would this further decrease the chance of adverse legal consequences for my parents? As it is they should have very little risk right?

Thanks so much for any help you might be able to give!

Yep, you basically have 2 things here.

1 Family first, drugs second.  They are your family, you need to make decisions based around their safety and wellbeing.  And yes, there is the potential for them to face legal repercussions.  They also have the right to protect your younger brother from exposure to whatever they want.

2 It's their house, they have the right to live in it under the conditions that they like.  Nobody should have to feel uncomfortable in their own home.

I'm afraid the morally correct thing to do is come up with a plan C, if there is one.  I'm in the opposite situation, a parent having to keep my grow out of the house, it can suck, but family comes first.  Give the outdoors another go next season if you can.

Best of luck with it.

Look, buy a 50 ltr tub with lid. Put a 4 inch or 6 inch hole at either end, depending on what size ducting you use. Cover the holes with fly wire and attach your ducts, 1 from the room, 1 to a window. Half fill the tub with kitty litter, or even perlite, douse with eucalyptus oil or essential oil of choice, and put the lid on. Still think respect your mother though. Cheap and effective for a plant or two.

If you have your grow setup properly, they can work well. BUT You state that you did not believe the smell to be an issue. Sorry, you didn't know about smell, sorry again, but WTF are you smoking.

Now smoking is one thing, but the smell from growing can be, if not manage appropriately, the key that gives you away. ( I know, I got done, due to odour. And mine was in a shed not even connected to my house ) A padlocked cupboard ain't gonna stop smell (nor the police.) Suspicion alone can be enough for the cops to search everywhere and I do mean everywhere. I know a bloke who built a false wall in his house, entry into it was from a set of dropdown stairs in his basement, the whirr of the fan gave him away and the cops tore the gyprock off the wall to gain entry.

Now there is other methods of masking the smell ie ionizers, air purifiers, essential oil filters, ozone generators, etc. But, if it is someone in the know, who maybe able to detect a 'familiar aroma' gets a tiny wiff. For example, the house 2 doors down gets broken into, the cops come door knocking to see if anybody saw anything. And get a wiff, You are screwed. In this scenario though, not just are you screwed but you are within the family home. This makes your parents responsible for your actions within their premises. Also in growing within the family home where there is a minor, your 5 year old brother, this can be seen as you placing the minor in a detrimental environment, thus having him removed and placed in care.

You may think that I am being a bit extreme about all this, but I have been working in social services for 2 decades and I've seen it happen and often not to the 'growers' but to the home owners/lease holder. So yea, the choice is yours and the information is out there.

Although you may not like the info you've been told by others here, I have to agree with them. You are putting a lot at risk and not just yourself but others around you. The choice is yours and you have to decide if its worth the cost. My advice would be to get your own place and take the responsibility yourself. That would be the 'safest' course of action.

DO NOT take the attitude "Ahhhh, it wont happen to me" cos if it does you are, in technical terms, FUCKED.

Sorry you may not like it but there it is.
