inside the bud

Good question .

I have no idea but would assume  the resin  must be secreted from the plant itself with the highest concentration coming from the buds . We also look at tric colour for ripeness .

Edit : and the resin covers the calyx/pistils ( not just the outside of a bud)  and as the bud forms more and more calyx/pistils grow together to form a bud so i guess it they do .

The entire cannabis plant contains cannabinoids, even the roots of the plant.  Having said that though the concentrations of the cannabinoids like THC drastically differ depending on the part of the plant in question.  From memory from least to most concentrated it goes roots, stems, shade leaves, branch leaves, resinous leaves, buds and then the resin itself.

A strains potency has nothing to do with light penetration, its all about reaching genetic potential.  Resin isn't the only indicator of potency either as the concentration of cannabinoids differs from each part of the plant which means the high you get from smoking bud can be vastly different to the one you get from making hash from those same buds.  The more you refine the product the more you exclude which means you sacrifice quality for sheer strength of certain cannabinoids.

Another thing to consider is that certain varieties of hemp can have resin.  They're still hemp and not potent at all.  I know that doesn't hold true to drug varieties, but its food for thought.
