Cannabis cup winners vs the rest.

Recommended Posts

Looking through various cannabis strains I was confused and fascinated by the large variety of genotypes available.

So naturally i am wondering how to chose...

Are the Cannabis Cup winners a cut above the rest? or should I go by price to determine quality? Are the strains quite true to their description, or only half true? (exotic scents and flavours, and type of high)

Your thoughts and experience please.

I don't really think cup winner or price accurately reflects quality. Phenotype makes a huge difference here, ie how likely is it that you will find the same phenotype even if you are growing seeds of the same genotype (strain).

You really have to narrow down what you want before you start looking or you will just be overloaded with info.

Marketing is everywhere, even in (especially) cannabis breading - The winners could be seen as trendy, preferences in cannabis tastes/effects are subjective...

Price = quality? No, not always, but the marketing guys what you to think that.

"strains  true to their description, or only half true? (exotic scents and flavours, and type of high)"
Mostly true, most discriptions are very broad and include enough info to encompass possible phenotype variations - i.e. a range of variations

Start with what you know you like/want, my most important choices are taste and high.

I like skunky, fruity sweet flavours, not a fan of many Dutch crossed strains (wrong flavour)

Interesting question that will hopefully get some good answers based on experience.  Agree with Matanuska about the marketing though, it is rife in this marketplace.  I tend to see it for what it is and take it with a grain of salt.  I've spent the last 6 months or so trying to figure out seed purchases myself, and it was a nightmare.  I ended up breaking it down into a few categories for lack of a better word, such as hash production, medical usage, pure indica, and pure sativa, and went looking for a few that appealed to me for each.  Then tried to whittle it down to an affordable and sensible short list.  Now I have several years of trying them to find what works for me.  Best of luck with that.

On the cup winners though, I was seriously keen on a cup winner, vanilla kush by barneys farm, won awards and sounded awesome in all respects.  Did a bit of looking for reviews/experiences online, and found some experiences that didn't justify the hype and price.  So probably worth doing the same for any you are considering.  Also, sounds like some breeders have better reps than others.

Don't have the experience to advise on choices, but will recommend a bit of research, and a bit of suck it and see.  Or, check out some of the grows on this site, and pick some strains/breeders from those.  Hope it goes well for you

Probably going to cop shit , but I grown a few Dutch Cannabis Cup Winners..............

(waits for barrage of cans, and rotten tomatos....)

Got a few more in the fridge too...... lol

I mainly stick to Barneys, and why not, they have a good reputation. So if I see a cup winner, I take note, do a little research on the net into how people are going growing it, and then order it the following year...............when its cheaper. lol

There is soooo much Bullshit around about the Cannabis cup, its not a rigged event......"Enter Conspirasy Theory Here"........ I've heard them all, from seed breeders paying off the judges, to the actual companies bribing high times direct...... all Bollocks.

Sure some shadey shit goes on, but it aint in the judging of the Cannabis.

The Judges invited to this event take their job VERY seriously, its no small thing.  To be a judge for a CC cup is a great honour IMO.

Maybe some people need to remember where LSD came from.............. probably one of the Nicest smokes I've had, and others agree its top notch.......Thats a Cup Winner.

I'm not saying buy all cup winners, just that they are worth a look. Landrace strains are also worth a look at World of Seeds, as is anything Shantibaba breeds at Mr Nice.

DNA genetics has some interesting plants occasionally and occassionally I grab one from them.

And on the flipside..... I also have Visions - Amnesia .......Seed breeders I never heard of........ and in me grow room, you can't fault it. So who is to say??

Luck Of The Draw........ Same as Phenotypes...........

Peace. Nibbler.
