Is my almost like new 15yr old 600 watt hydro light still ok to use ?

Recommended Posts

Hi there ok 15 yrs ago I decided to buy a 600 watt Hydro light  bulb and electric nutrient stick to measure ph.

However a week later just as I was ready to start growing I broke up with my X and fear of her dobbing me in decided to pack it all away and never bothered to grow.

Well 15 years later here i am and am thinking about growing again however am wondering if all my gear is still usable ?

I am pretty sure the ballast should be ok my main concern is the light bulb and the nutrient stick guesing that even though the bulb has never been turned on is probably buggered by now and the nutrient stick even though never used the battery is probably dead and dont know if these can be replaced or not ?

I cant get to my Hydro light and have a look to see if there working  as there boxed up ( not at my house ) but a 3hr drive away however i will be going up to collect them if it is worth me while depends on the outcome on here i gues.

Hey  gunnumganjastyle,

Your light should be fine, especially if it aint been used. I have some old bulbs here and they still work. The lumens decrease over the working life of the bulbs, but if they have never been working then this decrease will not affect them, that is my understanding. Now the line 'electric nutrient stick to measure ph' is a little confusing. A nutrient stick measures nutrient concentration in ppm (Parts per million) and a pH pen measures pH. I havent heard of an electric nutrient stick that measures both ph and EC. I maybe wrong and other members here will let me know if I'm wrong lol.

The only concern I would have with the meter would be the batteries, if the meter had batteries in it, over the years the batteries may have leaked and damaged the circuitboard inside the meter. But otherwise obtaining batteries shouldnt be a hassle.

Just make sure while the ballast is unplugged, ya spray the inside out with air to get rid of any dust. Wipe ya globe down with windex and a rag, and DO NOT touch the glass.

Merlin is spot on, if ya havent used it , it will be fine. But saying that, if there is ANY rust on the transformer in the ballast, ditch it. Ballast cost ya 250 bucks, so not worth the risk.

Peace. Nibbler.
