The Hash Nibbler
I have been using one of these new UV filters in my fish tank, and was wondering......... What if you could run DWC with NO bacteria, and therefore, just nutes, and no enzymes etc or H2o2 to clean your system....... could be worth a shot. In case ya wondering, it passes the water past a sealed UV lamp, that sterilizes the water. There is an indicator light on control box, if lamp ever fails, it goes outCleans 120L per hour, and this lil 9Wer will do a 200L tank. Was about $90 at a pet shop, just released for aquariums.Any ideas, or discussion on this welcome, as I dont do DWC , but thought may be helpful for someone out there, or for people wanting to scrub water of bacteria. I was reading up on Aerobic and Anerobic enviroments. Aerobic (aerated/good bacteria) and Anerobic (Non Aerated/bad bacteria) which perked my curiosity.....People run systems with H202 to keep a sterile enviroment, so why not UV treated and no H202? Peace. Nibbler. Edited March 8, 2013 by The Hash Nibbler
bufo marinus
hehehe, you can tell who the thinkers are but unfortunately Nibbs the UV messes with the chelates in the hydro solution... the iron chelates I think mainly. If you look further into it I think there are 2 different types of chelates for hydro solutions, the better brands use both types and the chelate available to get around this problem I've only ever seen advertised for sale in the UK. It can be done but it's a head fuck.Personally I think dwc work best after running for a few weeks and the healthy bacteria have built up... keeping 1/4 of the res at res change ensures the bacteria build up again quickly and also this is where bubbling the chlorine out of the water really seems to work. bufo marinus
Yeah well if your serious about dwc eventually you end up checking out the 'Aquarium water chillers with built in UV' web pages Like I say, you can see who the thinkers are and if you understand the chelation problem as well, go to the top of the class To take this line of thought one step backwards though, if you can maintain a constant water temp of 20 - 22' C there should be no need to turn the UV filter on.... but I see your reasoning for sure Nibbs, it would be handy growing tool if it worked
