This powerful home-made launcher was used to fire packages of cannabis over the United States border.

Cops in the Mexican city of Mexicali discovered the improvised device that fired cylinders packed with drugs that weighed as much as 30lb (13.6kg).

The cannon was made of a plastic pipe and a crude metal tank that used compressed air from the engine of an old car.

It was confiscated last week after U.S. officers told their Mexican counterparts they had been finding large numbers of marijuana packets near the border fence.

Mexican police have recovered a series of similar devices in recent years
