Growth stimulants

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever used growth stimulants on their plants?

I have never grown the stuff before but horticultural pursuits have always been my hobby (propagation grafting etc) and a while ago I was working in a nursery where they used growth stimulants to speed up growth and get the plants out the door faster. The stuff was in 4 litre containers and I scoffed off with about 250ml (plus dillution notes on an envelope) for personal use.

I used it once on some blackwood seedlings I grew when they were about 30cm high with immature leaves because blackwoods by nature are slow growing. I used the prescribed dilution rate but they kind of freaked out with the next leaves being a bit strange looking and very pale. After about 2 weeks they settled down with lovely green mature foilage and grew quite quickly and continue to grow at a faster rate than untreated blackwoods naturally occuring on the planting site.

I was thinking of trying the hormones on my baby plants but thought the sensible thing would be to ask the question before experimenting on them.

I'd err on the side of caution and say no.

There are lots of PGRs used by the horticulture industry to speed up growth, maximize flower size and colour etc. that are used for ornamental plant varieties that aren't intended for human consumption.

Some of the compounds are pretty toxic, don't think I'd wan't to be smoking or eating them.

Growth Stimulants and Plant Growth Regulators are 2 different things........ Growth stimulants are things like Aminos, Vitamins, beneficials etc..... anything that boosts the plants health, therefore promoting growth.

PGR's are just something shit lazy commercial growers use to up their weights, can always tell the difference in quality and taste. No need for em.

Peace. Nibbler.

Hey Eccentric,

It is wise to err on the side of caution. As Offroad has said there is a number of PGR's (Plant Growth Regulators) out there but their long term use and human consumption do not seem to have been examined or documented. Some commercial growers do use them to maximise the growth and shorten growing times but again the long term impact does not seem to have been reported. Some of these chemicals do actually have warnings about contact with the skin as they can be absorbed topically, through the skin. But it seems there is little to no info about consumption via smoking

I have previously used PGR's and the warping of the new growth is not unusual. And the growth rate is improved but when I was made aware of the health concerns I ceased their use.

There is a concrete hardener (accelerant) called xseed but I doubt that anything in that would be useful for growing plants. Do you have the original packaging or did you borrow some from somewhere.

If you have the packaging you could determine what the compounds are and  use the international hazard standards to analyse the active components.

I found out mine has indol 3yl acetic acid which I looked up in this site

http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/product/aldrich/i3750?lang=en&region=AU

then checked the safety documentation and I think it was the WGK 3 that says its toxic if burnt which confirms everyones thoughts about there being a risk
