So, did you actually show them your Aus license, or did you tell them you had a Cali one, but "lost it behind the couch"?

 

Showed them my Aus license and said I was yet to get my Cali one. Showed my Aus passport too.

 

Did the research and picked a location more likely to process tourists. If a medical assessment clinic is situated on the promenade at Venice beach, its pretty safe to say they are targeting tourists.

 

The trick is not to act cagey. They want your money, and are happy to be 'fooled' into processing a tourist. Of course no one is actually fooled.
