A complex situation, hopefully solved with some simple solutions

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Before I go into this, I wanna say, I'm really loving the forums here. The lay out of the site looks great, the regs and mods are polite, friendly, and clearly know their stuff. Just an all round kick arse site guys, much thanks and respect. :)

I've spoken with a few reg's already, but I'm trying to get myself organised and have a well researched plan on my method before I start my first serious outdoor grow. My situation in a practical sense presents many challenges, but I do believe if it's done right, will be a damn good grow.

I've been reading up on other posts here in the outdoor section, but I don't think I've stumbled across answers to the questions I have. I've been into forums for many years, and so dislike the idiots who come on asking basic questions without doing their own homework by reading up first.

If any (or all) of my questions have been answered time and time again, please accept my apologies here and now.

I'll just go into it, and if there are any links to other pages, FAQ's that would help, please feel free to link them rather then waste your time answering what has already been answered.

I live on a small island, we have a dormant volcano here, the soil is amazing and all manner of plants grow wonderfully here. So I'm hoping there wont be too much need to alter the composition of the soil I use in my pots.

We have only one tiny shop here, and gardening supplies are virtually non-existent. If I need to buy supplies, they'll have to be ordered from the mainland, and having ANYTHING shipped over here without being eyed off by the locals when it comes off the barge is simply impossible.

I've wanted to start a herb garden (for cooking and such) Basil, Mint, oregano and such. Perhaps I could use this as my decoy so to speak when people see sacks of perlite, verm, potting mix etc. coming off the barge.

Having been a hydro grower, the best mix of soil for outdoor organic growing is beyond me. I was thinking perhaps a 'bitsa' mix (but that's based on very limited knowledge.

I love the water retention of verm, and coir, so perhaps a mix of those in with some of the volcanic soil here that the island offers. There is a LOT of old school purely natural compost here I can get barrow loads of. Banana tree compost, leaves and skins and such.

But I'm really hoping to give this first grow the best fighting chance to be a plentiful harvest.Could anyone suggest a basic and reliable mix of soil? or a link to a page that may be of use regarding this?

Also, we have land here that no man has walked on for hundreds of years (literally) where I can grow my babies, but it's almost all thick and dense forrest. On one hand, I'd like to find a good little secluded area surrounded by scrub, but clear enough that the babies will have direct sunlight.

I must admit though, I do worry about choppers flying over the island spotting my girls as they grow to a sexier (larger and flowering) age.

I'm a fan of keeping plants in pots, easy to relocate them if the need arises, the substrate they grow in is completely controlled, but the root ball is limited to the confines of the pot. Pro's and con's to everything in life I guess hey. :)

And last of all, strain to grow...hard one. I'd really like to do the PNG gold, someone suggested a 'walkabout' strain? I've never heard of it myself.

Are there any strains you guys could suggest that are a little more exotic perhaps? A strain known for outdoor growing, but will excite the locals more then aussie strains?

Anyone know if skunks, white widow, or skunk crosses can be grown outdoors in this kind of climate successfully?

Sorry again for asking basic questions, I'll keep searching the boards here for info that'll help me set up and get the ball rolling. But any suggestions, tips, links, would be much appreciated also.

Thanks guys, and see you on the boards :)
