When is the best time to start seedlings?

The sooner the better for soil.

 

A way to remember when to start and harvest out doors is start on father's day and harvest mother's day, is the best rough guide...

i like to drop em at the end of october as the weather has well and truely had a turn for the better at this time

The passing of the winter solstice is a good indicator that the time has come to start preparing your outdoor patch. Use the slowly lengthening days to do some weeding and to cart a few bags of manure out to your plot. It's still too early to think about germing any beans.

My outdoors are cracked and potted already.

Go to bunnings, in the gardening section out side. You will find a bunch of greenhouse, the have a mini greenhouse in stock cost about $30. About 900x600x1500 easy to set up 3 shelfs. Grab a bag of seed raising mix don't get cheap stuff, then go get your little plastic black bags. There like 3$ for ten pack. Bang your beans in now. Put the green house in a sunny spot. If it is really cold bring the greenhouse inside. By the start of August there six weeks old, real nice run up.

Was thinking the same thing Panter. I have been working on the garden for about a week now, getting it sweetened and cleaned up a bit. I am really keeen to get a few going early but its been so cold and wet. Aotta have a look at those lil greenhouses at bunnings maybe. Its only my 2nd time growing and I was way underlighted on the firs. Lil bonsai looking things! I can't stop looking at them though and want some more!

I've started, but I'm growing ebb+flood outdoors, so the roots don't get as cold as soil despite ambient temps of ~5 degrees overnight

That should work fine. Plants can withstand pretty low temps aslong as the roots are kept 18-24degrees
