the quietest centrifugal fan to date

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

i am lost in the reviews and variety available on the market at the moment

may i ask you to suggest the most quiet centrifugal or any alternative sort of fan to work with a carb filter?

with the room is 1x1x1.8 m i am aiming at a 6-incher. suggestions as to the diameter are also much appreciated

the thing is going to be in the bedroom so reaaaaly need to deal with the noise issue

Fan noise is usually not the biggest noise issue mate, it is the air rushing through ducting that makes much more noise then the centri .

I have 150mm can fan and by itself is pretty quiet but it sucks a shit load of air and pulling air through ducting makes noise .

Just letting you know that most silent centri still pulls air through ducting and you will have that to deal with.

Cheers

ok, but how about the persistent drone emanating from the motor so much talked about in forums ?

some falks say, the hum can't be beaten with dumpening the noise with mufflers/carbon filter etc.

how would the 150mm can fan fare against say td-silence td500/150sil ?

i have none of them, and to be honest just wanna get to the bottom and get the right thing

because i already waisted some money on this - got an allvent a60 which can't handle carb filters

better to over-ask in the forum than pile up unneeded vents in the house lol

No idea how the td-silence td500/150sil would compare.

If you go cheap you will probably get a noisy fan . 150mm canfan rates at 51 decibels i think . The motor and the spinning of the fan itself make bugger all noise , but it moves a shit load of air and once hooked up to ducting makes noise , i use acoustic ducting which helps but does not eliminate the noise .

Why is noise a issue is it for sleep reasons or for stealth ?

both. stealth is not of much concern right now as during the winter time i am going to exhaust into the room - to keep the precious

warm in and not waste it. but closer to summer time it's going to be an issue as well as i'm going to exhaut through to the balcony area

where the neigbours can hear

the sleep is the top priority now as the only space i got is the bedroom. and the thing is going to be like meter .. meter and a half away :helpsmilie:

Gday mate got similar requirements regarding noise as soon will be in the same room as where I sleep. At present I am running a westaflex 150mm housed in an insulated (carpet) box that makes the fan as good as silent....but as Badseed has already told u that's not half the battle won...its the air rushin through the ducting particularly just after the fan...other threads that have dealt with this issue suggest wrapping a doona round the ducting (wire to hold in place) and bobs your drunken stoned uncle...I will be giving this a crack tomoz so hope it works but pretty clever members have suggested it so hopeful.

Hope that helps.

I intake through a cooltube then its acoustic ducting , centri , carbon filter .

I got 150 x 500 phat filter and having the at the end of the line kills alot of noise ,the only noise i get is through the 1st meter or so before centri which i have muffled with blankets .

Acoustic ducting was pretty cheap i think i paid around 60 bucks for 6 meters . The other normal stock slandered ducting i got from bunnings was 27 bucks for 3 meters.

looks like it's time for mastering skills of making a DIY wooden housing box for centri

huge thanks for opinions fellas

Hey jsmith, just thought i'd let you know, I got a centri this week and i'm currently in the process of building a wooden box to quieten it down a bit, a good tip I read somewhere on here is to use double layered wood for the box, with a layer of carpet inbetween the two pieces of wood.

Thats what I am doing, then lining the inside with sound proof foam. I got half a roll from a foam supplier for 25 bucks and there is more than enough. Since i picked up the foam i've also read on here about home made silencers. A guy seemed to have a fair bit of luck with these, his was made with this foam inside some huge ducting.

My carbon filter is inside my wardrobe, then centri, then blowing through cooltube then out. I read above about the noise through ducting, even my inline made a fair bit of noise at the outlet, i'm hoping if I attach the home made silencer to this it should be near silent......that is the hope anyway. I'll try and remember to let you know how I go with the silencer

Cheers,

Stealth
