MOTHER-of-three Karen Hodgson was killed by an "inadvertent" shotgun blast fired by a man who only wanted to steal cannabis plants, a court has heard.

Scott Mundy, 31, of no fixed address, is standing trial in the Supreme Court accused of murdering Ms Hodgson in April 2010.

Yesterday, Jim Pearce QC, prosecuting, said it was not alleged the murder was intentional but a "botched attempt" by Mundy and two other men to steal four cannabis plants growing in Ms Hodgson's Sturt garage.

"It was a robbery that went terribly wrong," he said. "Four cannabis plants, that's what . . . led to the death of a 46-year-old mother of three."

Mr Pearce told the jury that one co-accused had already pleaded guilty to murder.

He said that man, 27, whose identity is suppressed, was holding the gun when it discharged.

"Neither (Mundy) nor the man with the gun intended to kill Ms Hodgson, they were there to rob her," Mr Pearce said.

The court heard three men broke in to Ms Hodgson's home about 2.30am on April 19, 2010 with a sawn-off shotgun.

Ms Hodgson and her son Daniel, 21, were ordered back into their bedrooms by one attacker when the firearm discharged.

Mr Pearce said though it was not alleged Mundy shot Ms Hodgson, he was still responsible for her murder because the charge encompassed the unintended consequences of a violent crime.

The trial continues.

My thoughts exactly Auntynorm...

These fuckers invade her home and try to steal that which she had paid for, worked for and nutured instead of taking the time to do it themselves. Not only this, but they come in armed with a motherfucking sawn off shotgun? In my books, if you take an action like that, and take that kind of firepower with you, then you absolutly should be found guilty of premeditiated murder. They chose to take a seriously lethal weapon into a potentially violent situation. Intentions be damned, these men are guilty because they put themselves and this lady in that situation when they had no need to.
