Hey all i had one of those nights were u just cant get to sleep as i was laying there looking at the roof i had a few idears on a small carbon filter, now what i need to know is it better to have the air pumped through it, like u have ya fan in ya chamber with ducting comeing off it to the filter (this can cause back presser), or do i have the ducting comeing out of my grow chamber going to the carbon filter and the fan at the other end of the carbon filter sucking the air through it and how much carbon shoul i use, the size of will be about 500mm long and 300mm round but that could change as i start doing it, so if any one here has build a carbon filter or has one that brout from a shop, can give me an i idear on how it is setup.

Hi ozmade. I have built one, (still in progress really, but the structure is there...) and I've also used a commercially purchased filter... The home made one is the basic design from the overgrow faq, and this appears like it will work quite well when I get it together properly.

The commercial filter was a small one, 500mm long and designed for a 900lps fan. My fan, the hydro turbo is 800, so it was getting a little backwash. The fact that I had to mount it externally from the growroom didn't help either, as the correct position is as you've said there ozmade. On the inside of the growroom, with the fan sucking air through the filter and out. That way the only way air can escape is by first going through the filter. I had to mount mine on the outside of the gr, I think I've shown some pics in my current grow thread in my sig somewhere. Anyway, it completely eliminated the smell, sure, but it wasn't the best way to apply it, and I didn't have the appropriate fan.

Depending on the size of the growroom and how many plants you have, you may need a largish unit, and also therefore a large exhaust fan. You should be able to buy both units together, the one I used cost something like 400 bucks or so, I may be able to get more accurate details on the unit and the included fan if you like.

So yeah, if you can, mount the carbon filter before the fan on the inside of the gr, and you should get the best results. Carbon filters rock, and are an essential tool should steath of smell be an issue for your grow... and it just about always is. ;)

Good luck ozmade, if there's anything else don't hesitate to ask. ;)

Activated carbon or charcoal filters are much more efficient if you draw air through them. For closet shows a coffee can filled with charcoal screened on both ends, and inserted into 10'' flex ducting works great. For larger shows you need a larger can of carbon. You must make sure there are no air gaps in the can as air is like water and will find the path of least resistance.Shake the filter every 2-3 months to turn the faces of the charcoal .You should get close to a year from this before needing to replace the guts.

I was haveing a bit of a read at og last night and seen a carbon filter that 1 dude build and it was easy to build and when finnished it looked like something u got from a shop, the 1 he build was 8" round and 20" long but like he sais u only need to build it to suit the size of your grow area and to get all the stuff for it would not cost very much at all so i am going to get the stuff and knock 1 up aussie style when i do i will let ya know how it went and if it works out good i will do a write up on it with some pics.
