Time of year to put outside?

Recommended Posts

I grew through winter in a green house for a few years during the drought... don't know how it would go in Vic without the dry, sunny winters of el nino around to help things along. I suppose if you have seed and want to see what happens... go for it. Just don't expect much of a harvest. If you really want to get decent harvest, save the seed for spring and plant in the appropriate season.

Poppy seed shouldn't actually germinate until spring. It is generally suggested to sow close to the end of winter (leaving it till spring usually means the birds eat all the seed). Do not cover with soil, covering with soil is likely to prevent germination.

I usually wait until after the last frosts and have planted from Sept to Dec to harvest before the cold and frosts start again in May before Anzac Day (the unofficial start of Winter) but I am no expert either, just what has worked for me in the past with my little personal use grow.

Having said that, I do have a couple of freebie seeds planted that are supposed to be cold tolerant having come from the icey regions of the northern hemisphere and am seeing how they cope with our winter :)
