espalliered buds

Recommended Posts

I will be transplanting my girls soon and I have been thinking about the best way to 'stealth' my outdoor buds ( just a plant or two in pots ).

I have to be able to 'hide' them from time to time in a narrow gap between a shed and a fence ( about 80cm wide ), so I thought I would try and put a wire structure up so that I can grow the plants sideways, rather than in the traditional bushy shape. I'll just trim all the branches that grow the wrong way and be left with a 2d version of a plant!

I don't need many buds as only smoke twice a week or so.

What do you think?

Has anyone had experience growing their plants in weird ways?

Yeah, it's perfectly possible. :D Just remember to avoid any pruning in the last few weeks leading up to flowering, and remember that the top or "crown" bud will grow the fastest. (Unless all the tops are at the same height.... )

Good luck, let us know how ya go. :P

p.s. you'll be far better off, IMHO mind you, to train the branches not growing in convenient positions (ie the perpendicular to the wall ones) instead of just removing them. Judicious pruning of inconvenient branches is fine, just yeah, remember that you'll only get so much growth out of it before it flowers, and the longer you have a stem the more chance it will have of growing into a lovely bud. :P

Just realised where you're trying to grow. Any area with a building on either side, when growing outdoors will have some problems. Make sure you have an area which gets a decent amount of sunlight to the young plants... In an area with a tall structure on either side it'll be heavily shaded for a lot of the day, so perhaps you could start them in pots on shelving in the space proposed, and as they grow out just drop the shelving so the tops are at the level where most sunlight can get to them.

By all means try and hide em, remember that they're plants tho, and heavily shaded areas for plants that like a lot of light are usually not good spots to grow.

Just thought of something else. You could get decent sunlight if the space runs east to west, across the path of the sun... so that the light can get in the sides and be constantly on the plants from sunup to down... mj doesn't mind a bit of shade, even relishes a bit of protection from the harsh aussie sun in the afternoon, but the less light = the less growth = the less vigor = the less buds...

Hope that helps mate... sorry to sound so down on the idea, but I'm sure that with a little ingenuity and thought you could get a crop out of just about any environment. Well, just about. Good luck bud. :P

I am growing 3 outdoors plants in a small backyard; 2 espalier and the other trained across a wall like a creeper. The espalier plants get only an hour or so of direct light a day and are pretty smallish still. The third plant makes use of a wall that is not good for anything else but get heaps of direct sun. I've twisted and tied it all ways and it keeps getting bigger. Cannabis is a plant that just wants to grow and can take all sorts of abuse - I wish my tomatoes were half as robust.

HI gruntus, I have 5 vegie beds and my tomatoes are powering ( full sun!)

What I meant in my original post was that occasionaly I would have to hide the plant ( when visitors were around etc ) otherwise it will get as much sun as it wants.

Thanks for the ideas Luke.

I wish we could cross mj with something like my passionfruit which runs for about 20metres down my fence. Now THAT wold be a nice vine!
