British going potty: poll

Recommended Posts

More than half of all British adults believe sale and possession of cannabis should be decriminalised or even legalised, according to a new survey.

A YouGov poll for The Daily Telegraph found 28 per cent favoured decriminalising the drug, making it a minor offence, such as parking in the wrong place, while 23 per cent wanted full legalisation.

Again, more than half (52 per cent) applauded Home Secretary David Blunkett's move to downgrade cannabis from a Class B drug to Class C.

Only 43 per cent believed selling or possessing the drug should remain a criminal offence.

The survey found, though, that 44 per cent regard cannabis as "seriously addictive" - but 75 per cent took that view on alcohol.

Respondents maintained a hard line on hard drugs. Fewer than 10 per cent favoured changing the law in any respect.

YouGov polled 2,536 adults across Britain online between January 20 and 22.

Ive heard Brittons smoke mostly hash and anything could be added to hash to make it addictive so I wouldnt rely on the 'seriously addictive' response. Its nice to see the 25% of people wanting full legalization!

Don't be so insulting.

The UK is now past the 50% home production levels. Must be doing wonders for our balance of payments position.

The poll shows the public are now being educated: they are very clear (almost 90%) that moves onto hard drugs are because 'cannabis is illegal and users feel they are within the illegal community' rather than any requirement of better highs after cannabis use. They recognise the advantages of separating out the markets.

Their 'addiction' response is probably due to the lack of clarity between ''physical addiction' and 'behavioral dependence'.

As for mostly hash or 'soapbar', there is an excess of sites idicating the dangers of using such a mixture.
