Respiratory health effects of cannabis: Position Statement of The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand

D. R. Taylor1 and W. Hall2,3

Abstract

Both the gaseous and the particulate phases of tobacco and cannabis smoke contain a similar range of harmful chemicals. However, differing patterns of inhalation mean that smoking a 'joint' of cannabis results in exposure to significantly greater amounts of combusted material than with a tobacco cigarette. The histopathological effects of cannabis smoke exposure include changes consistent with acute and chronic bronchitis. Cellular dysplasia has also been observed, suggesting that, like tobacco smoke, cannabis exposure has the potential to cause malignancy. These features are consistent with the clinical presentation. Symptoms of cough and early morning sputum production are common (2025%) even in young individuals who smoke cannabis alone. Almost all studies indicate that the effects of cannabis and tobacco smoking are additive and independent. Public health education should dispel the myth that cannabis smoking is relatively safe by highlighting that the adverse respiratory effects of smoking cannabis are similar to those of smoking tobacco, even although it remains to be confirmed that smoking cannabis alone leads to the development of chronic lung disease. Hi billy dysplasia refers to abnormal growth, and cancer or neoplasm(new growth) is the unrestrained proliferation of cells,

Cellular dysplasia has also been observed, suggesting that, like tobacco smoke, cannabis exposure has the potential to cause malignancy.

He is saying there is evidence of the kinds of cellular and genetic changes seen in cancer cells,

hope that clears it up, see you later

cannabis exposure has the potential to cause malignancy.

can you explain this for me pls?

Cancer basically, some of the same carcinogens found in tobacco smoke are found in cannabis smoke. BUT not a single case of lung disease or cancer or any serious harm like this has ever been positively verified from cannabis-only smokers.

I personally believe it's inevitable, that someone somewhere will get cancer attributed to cannabis smoke, but the risk must be amazingly low. Cannabinoids are also showing great potential as anti-cancer agents, killing certain types of brain tumour by starving cancerous cells of blood while not harming normal cells. Perhaps this is why there's been no cases of cannabis induced cancer, the cannabinoids cancel out the negative properties of cannabis smoke?

Even if cannabis smoke doesn't cause cancer, all of that tar and shit can't be good for your lungs - god I love my vapouriser

:D That's very interesting, it does seem to be a remarkable plant in more than one way. I'm so glad to hear of these study's on MJ, it can only be good if people know MJ is helpful medically, they might also see it isn't all that bad recreationally once there eyes are open..

I think mixing pot and spin together is worse than smoking pot alone, health wise. And I find it makes me cough, it's harsher.

Yeah, one day someone will get cannabis related cancer, it's bound to happen. And considering that a lot of people mix pot with spin, there would have to be some connection there.

as chev said so many people use spin or smoke cigs as well as bongs the cause and effect with pot would be hard to establish. Add to the fact that it would require patients being treated with cancer, who only smoke dope, admitting to the fact. Wouldn't happen all the time I don't think.

Everything is meant to give you cancer these days. I read an article the other day that said roasting your veggies for too long in the oven increases their carcinogenic properties. Who gives a shit, I like my potatoes crispy.

Spin is mighty tasty in a joint though I must admit, but I don't do it much.

Does anyone know what the difference would be between inhaling through a joint with or without filter and a bong? Exactly what does the water filter out apart from heat? It's certainally easier to smoke but doesn't mean there's any less tar etc.. but bong water goes foul & yellow pretty quick and I don't think it's all from the ash & crap.

I recently bought a vaporisor but find it's not quite the same.. the high sort of creeps up on you with a vape but with a bong you feel the hit pretty much stright up. I alternate between the two most of the time.
