Police have seized $7.5 million worth of cannabis in Richmond Local Area Command during the second group of raids in the 2011-2012 Cannabis Eradication Program.

Strike Force Hyperion comprises detectives from the Drug Squad’s Cannabis Team, with assistance from the NSW Police Air Wing, Police Dog Unit, Radio Electronics Unit and officers from Richmond Local Area Command.

During the past week, Strike Force Hyperion officers targeted more than 60 cannabis crop sites throughout Richmond Local Area Command, including Kippenduff, Rappville, Clearfield, Busby Flat, Mummulgum, Bulldog, Drake, Nimbin, Blue Knob, Kyogle and Tabulam.

A total of 3734 plants were located and seized by police during the operation.

The total estimated potential street value of the plants seized during the past five days is $7.5 million. All plants seized by police have been now been destroyed.

The Cannabis Eradication Program has been running since the mid 1980s with the NSW Police Force preventing almost $240 million worth of cannabis reaching NSW streets.

As in previous years, the 2011-2012 operation will see police conduct a number of similar raids over the next few months in an ongoing effort to target cannabis cultivation.

Acting Commander of the State Crime Command’s Drug Squad, Detective Acting Superintendent Steve Patton, said the Cannabis Eradication Program aims to disrupt the cannabis supply chain in NSW by targeting the source.

“Illegal cannabis growers choose their growing locations based on the mistaken belief that police won’t find them,” Det Acting Supt Patton said.

“However, as we prove with this program every year, we have the resources to find these crops and put a dent in the cannabis market.”

fucking inflation.

What a fucking joke. 20+ years and only averaged $12 mill per year. yeah the eradication program is really working. wonder how much meths, eccy and ice has been produced and sold in the last 10 years plus heroin, bet its way more than $240mill.

No wonder sydneys under such gunfire, all our resources are out bush walkin fukin up our day, eradication program my ass!!! If this has been goin on for as many years as claimed, and all other major crimes such as rape, firearm and murder etc... has been on a constant rise, would 1 start to consider reprioratising?

I'd like to note that its a great thing that these people in charge are only police officers not doctors, imagine how many more loved ones would die if these clowns were heart specialists? In other words...I'd be better off joining a middle eastern gang and becomming a gunslinging backyard chemist, I know I'd be safer legally...lol

Prohibition really needs to be sorted out, they've tried that ally, now perhaps its time to look at other options?.....education? regulation?

Prohibition has been and currently being prooven a waste of resources when you consider other current events, it's just a shame our "leaders" dont take the time to listen to the people, work with the people let alone try to understand the people.

Well I have a shotgun to saw down, a lab to tend to and 4 mercs to rebirth and hand out to my relo's....not mention my new fraud scam, pill press running 24/7 and i got 4 lil bakerys i need to go extorte on a daily basis....thanks nsw police, you guys are great!!!!.....(please note the sarcasm)

Det Acting Supt Patton needs a primer in market economics... reducing the quantity of cannabis supplied into the market will not reduce the demand for cannabis, what it will do is reduce the quality of cannabis for sale and increase the price.

If they truly want to put a dent in the cannabis marketplace then they need to find a way of reducing demand, as long as there is demand someone will supply.
