Personally I don't worry about such things. I have reconciled myself to the (hopefully) remote possibility that the Blues don't have the money/resources to waste on hunting me down. And if they do, I haven't bothered to use all means to safeguard myself so I guess its the Darwin Awards for me

 

If i do get captured my plan is to cry and cry and cry I'm gonna cry the place down; claim mental health problems and basically try to embarrass them into lettng me go unscathed.

 

what gets up my nose is i have a STINKING brother within spitting distance of here who is a pedophile - he was arrested for it in WA but got off and moved States. He (and his kind) is at large and able to wander freely, prolly picking up new vicitms on a regular basis ruining their entire lives, but there is nothing I, nor anyone else, can do about it!!! the police just say "none of our business." So, how dare they harrass me for growing a plant or two for personal consumption.

 

... And White Collars run free with carpetbags stuffed with money, guns, gems and enslaved women.... grrrrrr!

If your not selling pot, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Sure its still illegal to grow, but there are bigger fish to fry.

 

So as long as you don't incriminate yourself here, or tell your mates your mates your are growing.

 

If by the slim chance you did get busted, if you only have a couple of plants and no scales or baggies in the house, you should be sweet, depending on the cops descression.

Now, i really don,t want to start an argument about this, as i was only interested in finding out what the go was and how safe we all are. When we did a search, the only mj forum from australia that came back was o s. i'm not aware that there are any bigger fish to fry in australia. (there are no selling sites.)

 

Luke, this forum has only been going for a year or so hasn't it? Those dicks in england had been monitored for 8 months. Who knows what the bastards are doing right now. And an experienced hacker working for the leos could get straight through any fire wall.

 

if i can be tracked by websites trying to sell me shit than surely the cops can do it.I have multiple security programmes,( i still always seem to have tracking to remove.)

If you're selling pot, clones or seeds on the Net - you'll be the first ones targeted. Personal growers on a discussion forum are not a priority, but it would not be the computer crime guys chasing you here as they are seriously overworked and understaffed - I used to help some of them. More likely we'd be the target of the various drug squads - anyone can use a browser and collect evidence that way.

 

There are three ways you could get tracked and caught:

 

1. OzStoners.com itself is targeted - a warrant is served for the database and all personal information and all IPs that have been logged either in the web server logs or in the forum database itself are requested. If this site is not in Australian jurisdiction then this is highly unlikely. The Federal Police would have to get involved and request International co-operation etc. and this is just not going to happen for a site about pot unless it's clearly facilitating trafficking. Alternatively OzStoners.com or the webserver it's hosted on could be compromised by a "hacker" - this is probably the worst case as no amount of security and vigilence can give more than 99% security. In the end, there's nothing we can do about this except minimise the damage - see if we can disable IP logging on the web server, disable IP logging in the database, use SSL encryption for the entire site.

 

2. A warrant is served, targeting you specifically, to your ISP - who monitors and tracks which websites or IP addresses you interact with. This is extremely unlikely, but if you're involved in other illegal activity such as commercial sale or cultivation or something unrelated to pot, your chances are obviously higher. They need to have very specific information such as someone using a certain IP address at a certain time, or personal details such as your name etc. As OzStoners.com isn't on a secure server (SSL), if they're monitoring your connection at your ISP every single post and interaction with the site will be clearly visible in plain text. They've got you, they'll just see how much they can get you for. They'll have your password, access to your PMs, personal information, they could pose as yourself or edit your posts or whatever you can do with your account. Again, highly unlikely unless there's a good reason to serve the warrant in the first place and you're a person of serious interest - the computer crime guys will handle this but believe me, they're too busy chasing hackers and porn, they're literally swamped. I've been waiting on a follow-up call from them for almost 2 years.

 

3. You're using a proxy or "anonymous" proxy. Unless you explicitly trust your proxy, you're usually better off without them. Most of the anonymous services these days have been taken down, the few that remain are a primary target of hackers - the private information going through them is valuable. They may just be doing it for fun, or they may be trying to take down the service and let it fall into disrepute for some reason - maybe they're Government sponsored, who knows It sounds paranoid, I know, but think about it - every web request you make you're sending to some third-party to proxy for you. Unless the proxy connection is encrypted, all you're doing is giving yet another person access to your session, IP address etc. Your ISP can still log your connection. Unless you're using encryption, proxies give a false sense of security. You want to minimise the number of places your IP is logged and connected to this website, going through an unencrypted, untrusted proxy only does the reverse.

 

4. You post personal or identifying information on the web. This is the most likely way of getting caught - it only takes a few bits of information, maybe your sport, your town, type of car you drive or your partner's career, a strange pet species... it narrows down the possibilities significantly. To demonstrate, I picked a fellow OzStoner out a crowd based on one piece of personal information they voluntarily posted here. It's not hard. Private investigators and other dodgy people do this for a living, for me it was just an incredible co-incidence. Don't trust anyone. Be very careful about what you post here - try to keep your private life and even the vaguest of personal details or your job or your dog's rare species or your other hobbies off OS. You've got a much higher chance of being targetted by non-law enforcement types.

 

So what can you do?

 

Use encryption! We should all donate to OS and get this site onto SSL. Same with MA - I'm doing this out of my own pocket but if anyone wants to help cover the cost I'd appreciate a hand. I'll put up $40 here for OS if Ozstoner is interested. This site should also be hosted outside of Australia - it seems to be hosted in the USA and this worries me. Move it to Canada, I thoroughly recommend hosting with drugsense.org as there's significant safety in numbers, these guys have legal and political experts at their disposal and will fight tooth and nail to protect all of their sites. OG has recently moved to Canada I believe, it's a good idea.

 

Don't post any identifying information about yourself! It's easy to slip up, just be careful. Go edit your posts now if you think you might have said something you shouldn't. I'm not trying to make anyone paranoid here, just encourage some basic security precautions.

 

Don't get involved in any financial transactions - don't sell pot, clones or seeds. In my opinion that's just asking for trouble, and if they catch you they'll have evidence supporting a commercial operation and then you are fucked. Keep it personal. Don't bring attention to yourself through other crimes - most people are busted because the cops were at their house investigating another matter. If there's sufficient cause, they'll take your PC away and have access to your browser's cache, your login cookie and hence your OS account.

 

Just keep your head down. There's always a risk, we live with that as smokers and growers, it's all about managing the risk. There's no reason for this site to be targeted, it's a clearly for personal use. Just use common sense and don't let paranoia get in the way of the things you enjoy. If they want to catch you specifically, they will, but chances are it won't be because of this site.

This is the reason for the rule against selling cannabis products on this site, personal growers are a very low priority compared to rock spiders, drug dealers and the like and Oz is very paranoid about security.

 

One or two members here have given enough information for the cops to track them down with very minimal effort, I actually rang one member to let that member know that someone else had posted enough details to let me track the member down, someone got one hell of a surprise. What I am getting at here is that Oz and the mods do what we can to keep this site secure, but what members post has always been the biggest security risk at Oz Stoner's.

The only reason i'm coming to this site anymore is to try and help you all see the light. Jesus came to me in a dream and he said:

I think that a post like that should be pinned in Dr Livingstone i presume, when i arrived on this site , i knew fuck all about security (which is why at this point i'm wishin there was longer than 1 day to edit my posts),that sort of information should viewed on arrival by all newbies.

 

 

Personally i'm goin to try not to be so paranoid about this issue, and try my best to think of my security instead, after all what's done is done anyway right? ::
