pipeman goes outside

Recommended Posts

sorry to say this mate but even with water crystals, in mid jan to feb the plants are gonna need10 litres a day! at that time of the year i give sativas 15 to 20 litres a day. the indie's get 7.it's gonna be a furious summer.

my suggetion is to find a water source 100 metres or so from your plants.preferrably in bush or scrub country.

remember mate, the native shrubs and trees will suck up a lot of the water. may pay to line hole with plastic.

i water my seedlings twice a day for first week then once a day there after.

with outdoors i believe it is best to pot on a couple of times. last year we had some big winds in our area. a mate of mine who plants straight into the ground 2 weeks after germination copped the storm as well. a lot of his plants were ripped out of the ground. we copped a worse brunt than him and all my plants stayed upright.!

i keep potting on until they are sexed. there's nothing worse than caring for a male.

have you thought about stealth?

i feel outdoor stealth is very important. more so from being ripped off than anything else. i have spent probably days conceling my sites and checking from every possible angle.

you could be standing 5 meters away from my plot and wouldn't know they were there.

potting mix is good for pots. you are far better off to improve the original soil.

are ya gonna grow on private property or crown land?

Put them in big buckets with the holes drilled about an inch or 2 up the bottom, and every time you water fill each bucket till water comes out the hole, up here tons of growers do it in huge rusty drums, just in ground soil and chicken shit.

this way you can get away with visiting every 3rd or 4th dry day. If you chuck them in the ground then you'll need to visit every day.

and you can carry 40ltrs you pussy.

Get them round tin watering cans and a metal pole mate, thats what I used to do and carry it across my back with 4 on each side.

If you can't now, you will by the time they are big enough to need 40ltrs instead of 30ltrs.

Also instead of potting soil by a nice bag of compost and mix it with the local soil. add lime and gypsum if needed.

Have you considered a reservoir system? You could set up a dripper similar to Taz's setup, this could be initially filled with a couple of trips before the grow starts, and then topped up with each visit... That way you'll know exactly how much water to bring too... (provided your system is leak proof of course...) as there are drippers which are set L p/h or adjustable to whatever you need... a gentle incline will provide the necessary draining force...

Course, you gotta lug the reservoir out there in the first place. :D But perhaps something along these lines may help you Pipe. :)

WC, you read my mind vis a vis pot growing, all my hydroponics pots are designed in a similar fashion, with the drain line a few cm's above the base of the pot, so as to leave a reserve of nutrient which to some degree also wicks through the media... The more compact the media the less of a reserve you'll need to keep the whole media reasonably moist... so soil growers aren't really recommended to use this unless a base layer of extremely free draining material is only in contact with the water... Otherwise a soggy plant ye shall have. ;)

Oh, one more thought Pipeman, you considered a simple hydro rtw or even perhaps recirculation? I know it may seem a stretch, but really, outdoor hydro could save you a lot of water, not to mention the obvious benifits of growth rate, etc... Give it a thought mate.

Good luck Pipe, you're gonna need it.... ;)

hey w.c growing in those big buckets or rubbish bins, wouldn,t you need to take twice as much water? i would have thought that after 3 or four days the soil would be that dry that the water would just rundown the edges and not actually penetrate the guts of the soil.

yep carrying water builds muscles you never even knew you had.

i tried carrying carring buckets on a pole like a chinaman, but found it too awkward. i kept banging into trees and stumbling while walking up hills.

by the time i got to the plot half the water had already spilt. :)

i now just use 2 20 litre metal buckets and do a couple of extra trips.

man to carry 8 watering cans at once you must be built like a brick shithouse. remind me never to challenge you in an arm wrestle. ::D:

no man in the big drums the hole is like 4 inches up and the water is pretty much sludge in the bottom half of the container. I never done it myself, just seen alot of others who have. I only grown in the soil and visited with 40ltrs twice a day and still couldn't keep water up.

and no not 8 watering cans, fuck, only 2 on each side I meant. :D

I bet pipemans back that he can carry 80 litres of water on his back!

Although long term he stands to do some immense vertebrae damage..its not my back..I only have money riding on this...hehehe

Go for 3 times as many as you want to harvest - seedlings wont need more than a couple of litres but a flowering plant will like about 5L every few days.

Look into sphagnum moss for the bottom half of the hole IMHO [if the crystals arent already mixed in have a crystals V sphagnum showdown] - buy 1 pack [~$7 from Woolies], wet it and see how much water it consumes then put it in a plant pot in direct sunlight if you want to see how good it is [its 5 times better when its a foot deep]. Youll go back for more for sure [1 pack per hole is heaps - dig it up, flush/strain and reuse it when youre done hehe]. :D
