Drug equipment found in house fire

December 12, 2003

HYDROPONIC drug equipment has been found after a suspicious house fire in Melbourne's south this morning.

Two adjoining single-storey weatherboard houses were well alight when fire crews arrived in Princes Street, Port Melbourne, about 3am (AEDT), the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said.

Police said the cause of the fire was being treated as suspicious, with hydroponic equipment found inside one of the homes.

Anyone who may have seen a Jeep Cherokee in the area at the time of the fire was urged to contact police.

The fire, which gutted one of the houses, had since been brought under control, the MFB said.

Its stories like this that get me worried.. I have tried to ensure fire risk is minimized by having smoke alarms, extinguishers on hand, ensuring I dont over load extension cords/circuits etc but you can't be 100% safe. Does the GFI protection on my mains cut in when there's any type of electrical fault or is there still a chance of something going wrong and caching fire?

This is sad news. ;)

I too have an alarm and chemical extinguisher but most importantly I know how to secure fittings and I have cut-out switches [they will usually blow but they wont 'stop' a fire - only a fire extinguisher does this].

Another thing I can add to my computer controlled growroom!

If anyone is spooked by this and has any questions about their growroom just ask [a few people here can help you out]. B)

I think you can get electrical appliance insurance... not too sure if the cultivation of illegal drugs whilst using said equipment would still be covered tho... perhaps we have a member in our ranks from the insurance industry here? B)

But yeah, you can buy individual insurance for electrical items, doesn't cost too much I don't think, 50 bucks or something, and if the insured appliance fails and causes damage then you can claim on it... I have no idea where you'd get it and the details, this was told to me by a friend who buys a lot of this stuff... ;)

I've got contents, but in case I get robbed. I don't think an insurance company would pay up if your house and contents were destroyed by a fire that was proven to have come from your hydro setup. It would most likely void your policy. Same as like if you are .25 or something and crash your car. People should be thinking about using fireproof linings in their grow setups if practical. And around your ballast, or at least sit it on some rockwool. Keep flammable shit away from your lights. I've seen some pictures with setups just waitin to spontaneously combust.

Sleep tight.

yeah I got home & contents, but I was thinking maybe conducting illegal activities in your house might make that void no matter what happened. Cos drug houses are more likely to get robbed as well.

should really read through shit before handing your money over hey???

I don't know if I'd call the police in that situation anyways
