Latest possible planting time

Recommended Posts

Things have not gone well and here I am in December with nothing to plant.

I have just put some new seed in today and have my fingers crossed that they will come up.

My question is how late can I plant and still get some good results? Hopefully, I would like to end up with a nice quantity of smoko and some seed to carry on, so how late can I start to achieve this.

I have had a multitude of problems this year such as growing medium (two sheets of kitchen towel paper) drying out and possibly killing shooting seeds, seedlings being eaten, seeds that refused to strike.etc etc.

Oh yea, I plan to grow outdoors for holistic reasons.

Well spotted FRAZZ, I meant November not December.

You guys have made my day by saying planting time is up till xmas.

It seems I have been going early on other years.

Oh well, it's a learning process and I guess I will develop that green thumb eventually.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how planting at this time goes.

Thanks comrades.

G'day Tom.

Get 'em in now and you will still be ok. They won't finish until Easter or a bit later. Here's what I work on, in around Melbourne Cup time and out around Easter. This seems to be a fair rule of thumb. Now get stuck into your plot dig, dig, dig. Apply lime, blood and bone, sulphate of potash, compost, any well broken down manure. These wil provide your soil with the necessary organic material they need, to get a flying start. Also get a can of Go-Go Juice from Bunnings, about $15, as this stuff is canned magic. It's a pro-biotic for soil. It's probably worth a 20% increase in your grow. Just use as directed. Then when you plant out your seedlings, mulch well with your favourite organic mulch, I just use straw, as it's good and it's dirt cheap, about $8 a bail. So, get cracking, and you will still get a good result.

I like to do out doors from dec -jan .... using clones in the bush ... if from seed I would put them out as soon as you can

Clones usually veg at home for a bit then get taken out to the bush and going from a 24 hr or a 18hr light cycle and straight into the decreasing sunlight makes sure they dont reveg ...which is shit for trying to get nice tight buds

So clones round december 21

Seeds at least a month before the time of decreasing sunlight to give the little ones time to veg a bit Nov 21

I usually do clones for the bush ...I hate rouge males seeding the b-giger out of my herb

And I hate carting water so a short crop suits me haha

Cheers :bongon: Brimstond

Apologies comrades, I just found this thread this morning. I thought it must have been deleted cause the information was supplied. I was looking in the wrong places.

So, all this info is good. Now here is my plight.

I still don,t have any seeds up.

The last lot were put in on the 16th, into punnets and the punnets were placed in one of those cheap heated propagation trays. The weather has been pretty hot and the propagation tray spent the occasional day under a laser light roof (I'm suspecting I have cooked my seeds) about 20 cms from the laser light.

Anyway, to the point.

The 6 punnets in the propagation tray has produced one punnet of water melon seeds, the rest have not come up. Including Thai chillies, and others I can't remember right now.

I have resorted to placing some seeds into two film canisters with water in them this morning. I plan to leave them in the canisters for a couple of days or till they germinate, I'm not quite sure yet.

The seeds are good, some fron 2009 and some from 2011, just can't get them to pop.

The ones that did in early October (I'm guessing) all perished for varied reasons, mostly eaten.

What the heck is going on here? I'm begining to think it's not meant to be.

Please help.
