Construction Light

If its not a metal halide or sodium bulb then it wont be good - too much red is present in incandescents [halogen/mercury vapour/xenon]. If it has a ballast and takes a while to light up then you may be in luck.

A 250W from a hydro shop costs just under $200 and a 400W costs about $200 - A 150W security light costs just over $200 so save $200 and check some hydro or lighting stores. If you buy the security light from overseas then itll be a bit cheaper but make sure you get the same voltage so its a simple plug change if you want a small light.

Id go for a 400W lamp if I was after the best cheap light - remote ballast too because they cost the same amount as a lobay. I got a 70W MH security lamp from cashies for $60 and a new bulb will cost me $50 from a local lighting store so you can look in cashies for cheap stuff - check prices before you go because my light was marked at $100 and had a used bulb [i said they only cost $150 and the bulb costs $50 - heh].

That looks like it might work and if it is flouro then itll probably be cooler than an HID. Ive never seen one of those! See if you can get heat specs and light spectrum graph from the manufacturer and we can tell you for sure if its good enough [by comparing it to known HIDs and CFs]. Edited by Wilderbud

I'd be surprised if fluoros were much cooler than hids watt for watt, if anything.  In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they were hotter than the same wattage of HID with a remote ballast.  Has anyone done a comparison?

I can say for sure that compact flouros emit a lot less heat than an HID [of lesser wattage]. My 70W MH cannot be places within 6" of a plant but my 2x48W CFs were 3 inches away and covered more area with light.

I dont know about effective light though - they could be comparable in this respect.

The best thing about flouro is they are cheap to run [especially when you consider cooling in a small area].
