Dutch ban may promote NZ cannabis tourism

The crack-down on Skunk cannabis in Amsterdam gives New Zealand a chance to corner the global market.

Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis party leader Michael Appleby said ALCP policy would legalise cannabis for recreational and commercial purposes for anyone over 18.

"The GST from tourism and other export markets could reach over $1 billion each year," he said.

"The Dutch have banned cannabis over 15% THC and have restricted sales of cannabis to foreigners, undermining its appeal to cannabis-tourists."

Mr Applebys said outlets like the Daktory in Auckland, where cannabis can be bought from a vending machine, showed such outlets were viable in New Zealand.

"People from around the world went to Amsterdam for the authentic cannabis experience and they would come to New Zealand if we were retailing cannabis."

"There would be a boom in tourism."

Mr Appleby said the requirement for cannabis to be less than 15% THC would also undermine the Dutch hashish market.

I do believe Michael Appleby had too many bongs before the interview

"The Dutch have banned cannabis over 15% THC and have restricted sales of cannabis to foreigners, undermining its appeal to cannabis-tourists."

No, no and no.

No, the Dutch government has not banned cannabis over 15% (that would be sabotaging their own medical cannabis program, though it would effect fewer strains than you might think).

No, there is no restriction on the sale of cannabis to tourists that differs from local law, although the right wingers in the far south are in favour of it for their towns.

And no, there has been no drop off in the numbers of cannabis tourists visiting The Netherlands.

Apart from that, Mr Appleby's fantasy of stealing the canna tourists from The Netherlands doesn't make sense logistically. Much of the cannabis trade occurs well away from Amsterdam and goes to French, German and Belgian visitors. Those that can pop over the border on the weekend, rather than go to dealers at home. Even in the unlikely event that townships like Maastricht, on the Flemish border, close their coffee shops to all but Dutch citizens, I think it is highly unlikely that these canna tourists will be interested in flying to NZ to pick up a q.

Does it really matter. This would mean that a lot of Aussie tourists would be going to NZ for a holiday more.

alcp wont get enough seats in parliament to change the laws although hemp is startin to be trailled this year .

any tourist caught with dope probebly get a slap on the wrist .

few more years maybe , alcp got my vote though the rest of those parties are eggs . =)
