Greenhouse Growing

Recommended Posts

hiya ppl..

just asking if anyone grows in a greehouse as ive got 3 plants going atm, but having problems with Heat, ive added extra vents even fans on hot days i cover with shadecloth yet on a day of 27C temp in greenhouse gets around 45+

so you can imagine days of 40+ will get close to 60 i did try a misting kit but that just ups the humidity it dont do much for temps. the greenhouse size is 10'x8' pitch is 8.2' one side is shaded by trees other side cops afternoon sun & i got nowhere to relocated it.

have had a little leaf burn .. atm plants are doing fine i'm just worried about flowering time...

Left is LSD , Right is CHEMDOG the one closer is bermese kush do have another chemdog outside plus a super lemon haze.. only have room outside for 2.

allso cant run power to it. so the fans & pump for misting are 12v running through a dedicated solar system.

Anyone have any ideas as a way to cool it down better???

Greenhouse is a alum 4mm twinwall like you see everywhere on ebay....

Yeah those little polycarb greenhouses look like a great idea but, as you are finding out, they have some serious problems in our summers.

The two main things to consider are protecting the structure from direct sun and expelling heat trapped inside the greenhouse.

As you have found shade cloth over the roof is not very effective. It does protect the structure from direct sun but it hinders heat loss if it is laying in contact with the roof.

To be effective, there needs to be a substantial airspace between the shade cloth and the polycarbonate. Without a breeze across the roof it's the same as keeping your roof vents closed.

Also, if you have the space, a shade cloth verandah off the west wall will block the direct sun during the hottest part of the day.

With shade cloth you have a bit trade off between temperature control and getting enough lumens through to the plants. I've found that for greenhouse purposes the thinnest, lowest UV rated cloth works the best.... it's also usually the cheapest.

It's natural to place the cannas away from the door, unfortunately this usually mean the plants are in pretty stagnant air. Ideally, I'd replace the rear panel for a second front panel (yes, expensive but I did say 'ideally') and maximise airflow by opening the doors as well as the vents. Cheaper would be an extraction fan, mounted as close to top of the peak on the rear wall.... but it wouldn't work as well as a door in each end.

I think that is about it... protect from direct sunlight while maintaining good air flow both through and around the structure.

All the best with it, lou.

yer it is costly to add 2 doors at the back, after reading what you stated, i'm ordering 2 LOUVER VENTILATION KITS for the rear & i didnt think to suspend the shade cloth ive been using 50% uv but are now thinking of dropping it to 40% ALUMINET

as for adding a rear fan thats not the best option as this house block has no back yard its all front yard only, with a large 7ft high front fence, only location to put greenhouse was 4ft from front fence so rear is next to fence sure it does have some restrictions with air flow but wind mostly blows along the fence so i made a hinged board to redirect the wind into rear that makes a lot of differenced lucky enough the high fence blocks the smell from the path on other side. it does go over but from last years grow the smell was only noticed 80mtrs from the path.

i'm sure alot on here would think i'm growing very high risk well yes i am, but hey ive been doing high risk growing for 20 years :)

thanks for the advice..

The more vents the better, the heat has to have a way of getting out. Aluminet is a good product but you will still need to suspend it above the roof so you don't impede ventilation.

I was entering my 30th year when I was busted, try not to get complacent about the risks. Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it wont happen with this year's grow.

Ive been close to being busted twice i used to live in Ringwood Vic had 2 14ft monsters growing & one day had police helicopter hovering just above trees looking at my plants was outside at the time watering them i could see them pointing at them ,i waved to them then waited for the knock on door but it never happened , then a few years later bloke next door got robbed & cops were checking around his place & noticed my plants growing over fence, i was watering again , both cops Complented me on how nice they looked & still no knock on door.. I dont sell so have no gear to prove otherwise, To be honest I'm not that fussed about being busted. I'm more concerned about getting them stolen...

G'day Kringle.

I have 2 plants growing in my green house. 1 Red Devil and a Skank. I have a "Greenhouse in a Box" from Bunnings, it's 1.8 x 1.8 x 1.8m. I have it positioned to get all the easterly aspect, morning sun. It gets the light all day but misses out on the worst of the arvo sun. It was 27c here the other day, but with the front flap open it never got above 30c. This is the first time I've used it, so I'm still learning.

Here it is, it's made by "Shelterlogic". post-33553-0-28163300-1320973273_thumb.jpg

hehe cool little shade house Auntynorm

you have the advantage growing without that afternoon direct sun, my main problem is it hits the front at the hottest part of day. but i'm working around it now just picked up all the bits i need to suspend the shadecloth with the added advantage of a 3 ft veranda for the front,

last year my first grow with greenhouse wasnt as bad cos weather didnt get has hot.. One thing you will like is being able to grow auto's through the winter , they work great in that respect . winter this year i done a sea of green of 10 different strains they grew nicely & gave me a nice stash to last me till this harvest, that was before i made the vegie boxes..

hey kringle check out the pic above and you will see my greenhouse back in 09 bursting with buds! yea it got pretty dam hot in there some days but i found the plants in there adapted to the enviroment and buds did not get as fat as the ones outdoors ! plus the strains a thai variety from some seeds i brought home from thailand wich is ideal for the heat and humidity.

check out my abumz !!! :bongon:
