Lumatek from USA

Recommended Posts

Hi Ozstonians!

I am tempted to purchase a lumatek from the states.

This is why

600w

AU $362

USA $232

Inc Shipping

1000W

AU $450

USA $355

Inc Shipping

the states have them in both 120/240 variable and as a dedicated 240v version.

I was wondering if the mains plugs on these things are hard wired?

or of they are similar in the way a PC power cable works and you can disconnect the power lead and reattach a new one?

If any one could check their Aussie version to see if the cable disconnect would be appreciated.

Better yet if anyone has purchased one from the states i would love to hear about it.

Thanks

Look at freight for the first part then need to consider your warranty if something goes wrong, exchange rate isn't a huge issue at the moment. Yes they are hard wired.

:oldman:

Thanks,

The prices above include shipping, needing to cut a cable and void my warranty is something to consider though.

Brilliant! - Thanks Crusing!!!

Clearly shows the detachable cord and you would have no problems getting a cord for that here in OZ, I work accross the road from an electrical retailer/wholesaler so that should be no problems. As I am not cutting any cables my warranty is still valid IN AMERICA. Meaning if i get a dud i will most likely have to pay to ship it back to Cali. But hey that will just bring me back to square one in terms of cost, as if I had bought here in OZ. What are the ods of getting two duds? I mean the quality control on these things would be of a significantly high level, Lumatek didn't get there rep for having faulty product.

Better still I was talking to a company from a hydro shop in California today, they are telling me they have a dedicated 240V model with a detachable power cable, which they claim i will not need to buy a new plug or adapter to run it here in OZ. Worst comes to worst I will just get a plug from accross the road as I have read in Wikki that their (Americas) 240V plugs (used for dryers and other devices) are not commonly the same shape as ours, although wikki says they do have an uncommon plug compatable with Australia. I was unsure at first, after reading here the power cable is hard wired, I thought the shop in Cali were just trying to milk a sale out of me. after seeing that video I know they are aren't fibing. I am feeling fairly confident now that I could at the least get a sparky to make up a lead for me and keep the original cable uncut, so i could probably even get a 120/240 variable off ebay if the Cali shop don't have the right price (waiting on shipping quote). Just interesting to know the states stock a 240V dedicated if that is more attractive to anyone.

So now considering the 1000W version, don't want to rush in blinded by the saving, might research more and asses the postage if i was to need to mail it to the states. have a sleep on it, see if i get any more comments on here and go from there. will let everyone know how it goes.

Could even try to bundle up a few, split the shipping cost and still keep the order value under $1,000 dodging customes fees. Anyone wanna but a Lumatek of me, hahaha.

Seriously though, if there's anyone out there who has already done this I would be keen to here about your experience.

Thanks

hi, i was noticing that company had a 600w. dual ballast and was wondering if someone had some experience with it..

i have heard good reviews of the single 600w, but that you must get a digital bulb to go with it as it cycles differently and will kill a non digital bulb very quickly.

Whats included in thos prices you quote in your first post?

Hey Billygoat,

I got those prices online, Both Prices include shipping to your door, the USA price is in US$. US$232.00 currently converts to AU$228.62 on XE which is a fairly good guide, paypal will have its own conversion rate though.

Neither include bulbs or reflectors/hoods etc, although you can get the actual Lumatek brand bulbs from the states for about $85 for a 1000W and $65 for a 600w not including postage, havn't seen many Lumatek bulbs here yet so may consider bundling one if it can fit in the pack without bumping up the shipping to much. Although I doubt it would be worth sending the bulb back if it had any issue, my gamble.

Finding it hard to make that last move and send the cash, was hoping someone else had already tried this and could give feedback???

Have a google. There is plenty of information on digital ballasts online. There is varying feedback for different brand ballasts.

Some bulbs have reported early faliure in some digital ballasts. Google should help, google the name of the ballast you are looking at and the bulb and if you can't find anything try asking on here. Make sure to mention what brand of digital ballast you are lokoing at as they have different feedback.

Hardly worth the effort.... Im sue u could get better than those oz prices you listed with a servicable warranty........ The cost of the setup really is irrelevant in the greater scheme, so stop counting pennys....

I for obe am far more omfortable walking into a store with cash than using cards, paypal or some other traceable transaction for a purchase......and dont care if i pay slightly more, its in my hands, in my room, and floweringmy babies, not fucking aoround getting rejected at customs or me wasting my time at fucking tandy for a $2 power cord....
