I count myself lucky!

I count myself lucky on most things, but I wish this apparent rise in conservatism is going to stop soon. I knew it was going to happen since that thing in NY 10 years ago. More power, more control, next we'll be required to wear chastity belts, damn nanny state. The only thing that can ever save me from myself is me. So with this dire prohibiton legislation, I count myself lucky that I don't rely on making paraphernalia for a living, like I did in the 90s. In fact if anyone has bought a piece of glass from OYT pre-2000, there's a possibility that they've used one of my pieces. I've since concentrated on other aspects of working with glass, but will keep a hand in, making the occasional piece, because it can be a nice challenge that allows me to utilise my scientific and art training. When I do sell a piece, it's to the American market. Anyone know about the legality of making a piece here, but selling o/s?

hi all and thanks for the comments, I have more pics, I just didn't want to wear it out on my first show and tell post, hehe. I also make ... errrrm .... olive dishes and olive spikes for .... ummm ... eating errrlives ... I'm pretty sure that they are not classified as smoking implements, otherwise, how would all the ladies eat their olives at tea parties? These are all the rage on the other side of the pond at the moment.

I'm not really into making hookahs, I've made a few in the past, but they're a pain in the proverbial. Also i need my lathe set up for those and it's not set up atm.

Thanks for sharing Aussie Made Glass, it really is great to see some good quality Australian glass. I'm sure there is plenty out there just I don't get the opportunity to see very much of it.

 

Your "olive dishes/spikes" I am very impressed with, particularly the Japanese inspired ones.

I was lucky enough to have had a father who was a consummate scientific glassblower, but after 3 years of doing purely scientific work, I realised it wasn't for me. I ended up doing a course in offhand glassblowing at Monash Uni in Melbourne and completed my masters at RMIT. Both those courses are now defunct, RMIT closed their glass doors many years ago and Monash is about to get shut down, too. SCA in Sydney offers a glass course and there is the ANU in Canberra. Neither of those offer lampworking components. However, there are a few places around the country that offer lampworking classes, probably the main one being goglass in Sydney. I haven't set up a teaching area, yet, but after talking about it for years, I think I probably should.

I probably know what you're talking about, but there are so many different names for one thing that it'd be better if you send me a pic or a link, just to make sure we're on the same page. While it's still 2011 I can do it, but next year, I'll have to say no, I don't want put my glass career in jeopardy

Are bongs being made illegal? what are these new laws you are talking about.. I live in QLD and there are bongs for sale at all tobaconists..
